Sounds like a sensor problem. I recently called Sony with a similar problem for my own mini DV cam. They will give you a repair cost estimate and tell you how to send it to the company for repairs. They are also refurbishing my cam, besides replacing lens and sensors. It's worth the cost to avoid having to purchase a new camera. I have 7 or 8 Sony DV cams for my media business, and this is the only time sending one in for repairs.
The number as listed on the Sony website: Priority Service Line (for U.S. only): 239-768-7547. Once you wade through the maze of recorded menu options, and get to Camcorder Repair service department, they will help you very efficiently.
