Hi I had the same problem.. I was unable to open the laptop lead beacuse the botom side holding screw holes were broken. But, thanks to the lenovo service centre that they are replacing the bottom case free of cost.I think it is around 11 to 14 thousand Rs. cost. I am so much happy. I was just worried that it would cost half of my monthly salary. Now it is all fixed. It is under warranty. They have also fixed the problem of my keyboard also. And will change my battery too in free of cost. If you have the warrnty then plaease contact to the customer care. Number is 180030700010. It is also free of cost from any GSM or CDMA mobile. Have a nice time. And take care.

We have the exact same problem. Right hand side of the case is cracked where the screws are. When we open the display, it just cracks open the bottom. Lenovo support is been giving us the run around.

Hi,

I'm not sure if you're aware of this to be a known issue with Lenovo Y510. What you can do is to have the hinges replace. Lenovo offered free support for this issue because all Y510, for some reasons had this known problem and that is even though the computer was no longer under warranty. Unfortunately as I phoned them, they told me that the free repair has ended back in February 2010.

What I did was, I purchased a pair of hinges from www.lenovospareparts.com. I had it worked on by a local technician then because if I send it to their depot, I need to pay $80 initial payment plus the shipping plus the pay for the part and the labor.

The hinges just costs $18.17 plus the labor for the local tech was just $35, logically, I saved more and it just took 15 minutes for the local tech to replace it so he just asked me to wait and took my computer home.

Is there an easy way to fix hidge on Y510 lenovo ? this appears to be common problem . I am totally a clutz so the repair would need to be something a novice could do thank you

Welcome to Fixya

Here's the procedure on how to replace the hinge.

Tips: ** Take your time -- Be aware of cables -- Separate the screws and keep them safe -- Unplug the laptop and remove the battery -- try to use an anti static strap --

1) You will need to remove all the screws from the bottom of the case to remove the top. You will also need to remove the large bottom cover and take out a few screws (sorry I cant remember which ones). You do not need to remove the screws on the heat sink. It will be pretty clear which ones need removing.

2) The plastic cover with quickplay buttons is clipped on. There is a gap above the F2/F3 keys where you can insert a flat head screw driver and gently twist. Be careful not to damage the wires!

3) The keyboard then lifts from the top but there are clips on the bottom which need to be gently twisted out. Furthermore you will need to remove the cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard.

4) There is one screw underneath the keyboard holding the top down that needs to be removed.

5) After all the screws are removed from the bottom you can gently pry open the top from the bottom. Its all clipped together but you must be careful not to jam something inside. Check to make sure no other wires are connected that could be damaged when removing the top.

6) You will need to remove the 2 rubber pads at the bottom of the screen to gain access to the screws. After screws are removed you can gently pry the plastic cover off which exposes the top part of the hinge. I had the most trouble with this because i didn't want to scratch anything.

7) Remove the upper and lower square tab on the sides of the lcd and remove the screws.

8) The LCD actually slides down slightly which allows you to lift it and remove the hinges.

9) Changing the hinges is self explanatory at this point. Remember not to over tighten the screws!

10) Finally be very careful not to pinch the wires running past the hinges to the motherboard. I actually ran into a pinched wire which would cause the laptop to shut off when the screen was moved. So just be aware when tightening down the new hinge.

Lenovo Y 510 right bottom case screws came out .repair shop says I need a bottom casing but they can't find one. Lenoovo admitted they it was a design problem but they doid not have a recall on them.. it...

Hi mtown,

Lenovo is the only one who do have the the bottom casing for your Y510 and there's nowhere you can buy from. If you were already informed by Lenovo that they do not sell the part and the machine is already out of warranty then I'm afraid to say that there's really nothing more we can do for this. If you want you may contact Lenovo once again because they do an out of warranty repair. You can inquire about how much the cause may be.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Lenovo Ideapad Y510 Hinge problem

hinges take alot of stress as they have to be quite tight to hold the screen in a certain position, alot of laptops can have over tightened hinges and cause splitting in the housing. Hinges can quite often come loose.
Make sure all screws are present around the hinge area and if you can tighten up your hinges.
If the hinges are badly damage you can buy replacments for a few $ off of ebay

Lenovo y510 right side hinge is binding badly and plastic molding apperas to be separating

This is because if someone remove the laptop parts and put it back together wrong. or LCD hand broken inside LCD cover, Or broken screw, might not support the hinge from mainboard area. Do Not band more, you will demage MB section. may break the LCD or will creat short.
In this condition try a techguy.
