Cannot Access Saved Word 2007 Documents

When I try to bring it up a saved document to edit or print, Word 2007 says that it can't find it. If I send one of these documents to someone via email, they are unable to open it. It saves as docx.
I have been able to find the document by clicking "Open" on the "Office Button" in the upper left hand corner of a new Word document. It takes me to the file manager, I must then click the file that my document is located in and then I am able to bring it up. If I have recently used the document I can also find it by opening Word 2007 and it will be listed as a recent document.
My biggest problem is that no one else can open my documents and my second problem is that I must go through this convoluted way of finding the document, after Word tells me that it can't find it.
I am using the 2007 Office Home and Student Version and have tried to uninstall and install the software, but with no improvement. As a matter of fact I have two copies of that version and have tried both copies with no success.

    After much checking, we are almost there. People can now download my email attachments in Word when I save the document using "Word Document 97-2003" However, I still can't bring up a saved document (without going through a lot of macinations)or even download a Word document that I sent to myself!

    I'm sorry guys, but this just isn't working. I have two other computers with the same edition of Word and they don't demonstrate this problem. I still can't open a document I save, without going through a number of unnecessary steps. This is the Word response I get when trying to bring up a document that I have saved as previously suggested:

    "Windows cannot find 'C:\users\volamus\desktop\recipes\our favorite recipes\breakfast\german apple pancakes.doc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again."

In my opinion, this sounds like one or more Registry keys corrupted

You can try to find the wrong key using a Registry cleaner, or uninstall and proceed with a clean MS Word installation. Don't forget to create a restore point before.

Your computer is badely infected with virus. check with updated virus cleaner. then use microsoft word after installation of new/fresh copy of office. then save all your documents to word 97-2003 format as every one could use them easily.

How are you trying to "bring up a saved document"  Word File Open, click on explorer file icon, Word most recently used files list, other ?

Solution #4 BELOW will allow you to set Word 2007 to ALWAYS save using the more compatible .doc extension.  Repeated here for clarity (pilfered from http://www.technixupdate.com/change-the-default-files-save-format-from-docx-to-doc-in-word-2007/)

1. Open Microsoft Word, click office icon at the top left.

2. Now, Click the Word Options
wordoptions_thumb.png
3. Select Save in the left pane, then select Word 97-2003 Documents from the drop down.

4. Click OK

This may also help word 07 to find .doc files.

Hi,

On the retrieval of most recently used document in Word 2007, pls try:

  • click to open the Microsoft Office button;
  • click on Word Options button;
  • click on Advanced;
  • scroll down to Display;
  • in Show this number of Recent Document, enter a number you like;
  • click OK, restart Word 2007. From hereon, all your recent files would be listed and clicking on the file name would automatically open it.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    and hello again,

    Failure to open a document based on your most recent post "Windows cannot find 'C:\users\volamus\desktop\recipes\our favorite
    recipes\breakfast\german apple pancakes.doc'. Make sure you typed the
    name correctly and then try again." indicates that possibly:

    • the computer is open with another username and not "volamus";

    • after booting and when asked to which account to open/logon, select "volamus"'

    • alternately, you can goto Start, Logoff, Change Account;

    • fully share the document files of the account volamus inside the Document & Settings folder.
    Cheers.

Word 2007 by default saves a document with a .docx file type extension.
For compatibility, save your documents in 2003 format which uses the .doc file type extension.

    Is the document still in the desktop ? That's what the error message is saying : it's not there. (moved or deleted)

    Do a search for "german apple pancakes.doc" without the quotes in both computers.

Cannot Access Saved Word 2007 Documents - office2007_thumb.png
Microsoft word is the mostly used out of all the Microsoft office 2007 applications, but I have seen people some times in a situation when they were cursing Microsoft Word 2007.
It happens when you have saved some important document while using microsoft word 2007 with .docx extension and taken that file some where else where office 2003 or any version later than office 2007 is installed and you cannot open .docx files.

As .docx is the new file format recognised only by office 2007, and office 2003 or later versions of office cannot open .docx word document files.

What is .docx?
It is the default file extension for saving documents in word 2007. These docx documents are essentially a bunch of zipped XML documents

Let’s see how can you change the default file save format to .doc which is widely supported in the backward version of office 2007

1. Open Microsoft Word, click office icon at the top left.
office2007_thumb.png
2. Now, Click the Word Options

3. Select Save in the left pane, then select Word 97-2003 Documents from the drop down.
savefileextension_thumb.png
4. Click OK
We hope you like this small tweak, but if still you have a .docx files which you want to open in office 2003 or later version of office, try using some free web services like Zamzar.com or docxtodoc.com that can convert .docx files to .doc

Hope this works out for you.

Thanks

When you save a file, save it as a Word 97-2003 Document. You have to choose it from the "Save as Type" box in the "SAVE AS" dialog box. It makes the file compatible with older versions of Microsoft Office. The same applies to other Microsoft Office app like Excel, etc..

I hope this helps. Pls post back if it still persists.
Otherwise, kindly accept the solution that fixed the issue. Thanks!

The docx is a new format that came with the 2007 edition, so unless the other person also has 2007 it wont be easyly opened.

Try draging your documet into 2007 from the folder and see what happens?

You will notice that when you click on the Microsoft Office Button and Click New, you have many choices about the types of documents you can create. 1 Answer

I cant type in it

Hi,

There could be 2 things that are wrong.

1) You have reached the end of the Microsoft Office 2007 Trial.
When this happens you are not able to edit any documents. You will only be able to view and print your documents.
To fix this you need to buy an office 2007 license from http://office.microsoft.com

2) You are trying to edit a protected document.
Some people protect their documents or parts of their documents from being edited. The only way around this is to get an original copy of the file or the password for the file.

Hope this helps you

MS Excel 2007 won't save my worksheet

Hi,

I find this a little perplexing too. Without sounding patronising are you sure you are saving it to the same location that you are attempting to open it from?

Something to try.. Excel keeps a record of the last 4 things you were working on in the file menu. Try clicking 'File' then the 2 little down arrows (if they are there) and it should bring up a list of previous documents. Try the last one or 2 and see if either of these are a more up to date version than the one you last worked on. If so in future always choose 'File' - 'Save as' when saving a document and make sure you choose a document path you are sure of.

Really hope this helps.

Regards,

Andy

You can go to the office button at the top of Word. It is the big roubnd button. Then go to save as and in the save as type change it to word 97-2003 document .doc.
You can also click on the office button, then word options at the bottom. Next you would click on save and change the save as file format to Word 97-2003 and it would automatically save it in this format.
