Is your Flash on Forced Mode or auto mode? If it's on Auto mode, the camera decide that flash work or not! but if it's on forced mode, I think there is a hardware problem... I hope this helps

I need an external flash for my Minolta Dimage 7i

Having researched the internet - I've found a Minolta branded flashgun suitable for your camera. It has the bounce flash you ask for, however it's not cheap.

Here's the link:

Cannot get wireless flash mode to work on my 7D

It is not operator error. I had a similar experience and spent days pulling my hair out trying to figure out the problem.

Unfortunately, the 5400HS is NOT compatible with the 7D. Only to 3600HS(D) and 5600HS(D) are.

The problem stems from the fact that the digital cameras cannot to TTL (real-time) flash metering and have to rely on pre-flash instead.

Because of this, Minolta updated the control protocol to include a signal to tell the flash to pre-flash. Unfortunately, only the two newer flashes recognise and respond to this new signal.

I spent weeks trying various things to get around this, but with no joy. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your 5400HS just will not work properly with the 7D either wirelessly or when attached to the camera.

Matt.

5600hs or 3600hs equivalent in other brands

I live in London, England, and have never encountered the brand you mention. However, I can recommend the Metz 48-AF1; it has a Guide Number of 48 and does pretty much everything that the 5600hs and 3600hs do at far lower cost, including the wireless flash which the A2 can work with. It also makes sense as it can be changed to fit any major brand by adding the appropriate adaptor so is highly resaleable. In the UK the basic flashgun sells for around £155 and an adaptor is around £30 extra, but I've noticed on my travels that it's far cheaper when priced in US $.

How to power up a Minolta Program 3500 xi flash through a Canon S5 IS?

Im sure that model of Flash. Does the minolta flash fit the hot shoe of the Canon?
If it does then I would first try seting the flash to manual mode and adjusting that.
Let me know if the Flash does not fit and I will try to help you from there.
Take Care,
