Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Convergence problem

Both convergence chips need to be replaced and or some resistors and set adjusted.

If have the original remote go into menu and select convergence to see if it will adjust---if not chips etc need to be replaced.

Set most likely uses 2 stk-392-120 chips but a few use the -110 chip.

Sony post convergence repair problem

The flash focus is a joke in these sets--only adjusts a limited area and can make the set look worse--like having a cigarette lighter in your car--not really needed.

Flash focus rarely if chips have been replaced will SAVE the adjustments.

The set stores the convergence adjustments on a board inside--best way to adjust is with the Sony remote to enter the tech menu and adjust there--when done one of the numbered buttons is pressed and Save? in red appears--press same button again and it goes to green which means adjustments have been stored in the set.

The tech menu will also always give a much better adjustment of the entire sceen.

How do I adjust the convergane on my RCA p52921 52 in projection tv I just replaced the convergance chip the stk730-130 and it still looks 3d the place I got the chip said it would need to be adjusted

IF THE convergence is not better after replacing the chip something else on that power board is bad; be aware of the 10 or so diodes on that board---two are much larger than the others--those two supply to voltage to the convergence circuit.

Out of focus, double and triple images, I did the auto convergence, but the manual convergence does not seem to do anything

1.) If the set will not adjust one of the two STK-392-560 convergence chips in this set is bad.

2.) You can buy both chips on Ebay for less than 14 dollars plus shipping.

3.) Usually, just both chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted--sometimes there will be a fuse or resistor that protects the chips bad as well.

4.) If you are able to do this repair yourself you can save a lot of money---Most shops try to charge 300-400 for this kind of repair---I have done hundreds of them and here I charge 200-250 depending on the set.

5.) If you are not able to do this yourself shop around where you live--if they say it has to go to the shop---keep looking as any good tech can do this repair right in your home--usually takes about 1 hour.

6.) The reason this kind of problem happens in all rear projection sets is the chips are mounted on heat sinks to keep them cool(metal with fins) and a white grease(heat sink compound) is applied to the metal back of each chip to quickly transfer heat---after several years from the heat the grease dries out and one of the chips cannot stay cool enough and it fails.

7.) After the chips and any other parts are replaced and the set adjusted--it should not have this problem again for several years.

Phillips big screen tv model 60PP9209/17F

I have seen this before--This set uses 2 convergence chips--usually they are STK-392-120 CHIPS--sometimes they will be flaky when cold--both chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted.

You can buy both chips on Ebay with shipping for less than 20 dollars. The chips are located on (usually) two metal heat sinks side by side and are about 2 1/2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall---they will be black and have the STK number printed on them in white. If you open the set and locate them confirm the number that is printed on them.

Sooner or later if you keep using the set this way it will damage other parts around the chips.

MOST shops charge 300-400 for this kind of repair; I have done hundreds of these sets here for about 200-250 including parts, labor, house call.

If you cannot do the repair yourself look for someone in your area to do it--takes about an hour and any good tech can do it right in your house.

Make sure whoever you get to do it changes BOTH CHIPS--if not you will soon have the same kind of trouble again.

If you have any questions or need help reply to this post here.

I do this here for free so if this has helped you take a minute to give me a vote here.

Usually in this situation--just the 2 chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted!

After about 3 minutes of my tv being on my convergence goes out of wack. I've tried to line it up but not all the lines will move back. Plus it works if I turn it off/on but only for a few minutes.

WS-65907 is a Mitsubishi 65 inch tv--it uses two STK-392-570 Convergence IC chips---I have repaired hundreds of these sets with this kind of trouble---the 570 Ic can be intermittent---You can buy two of them on Ebay for under 13 dollars plus shipping---this should be instantly fixable in your home---Get someone who is familiar with this kind of set; the center board inside has both of the IC chips on it; it needs to be removed and both IC chips replaced--all that is needed after that is to adjust the set with the Mitsubishi remote control---usually the whole repair takes about a hour in someone's home---I know----I do this on a regular basis---if you have any questions or need direct help of any kind contact me at my email---- etower.766@netzero.net---if this has been helpful I would appreciate a vote from you here. Convergence will not line up after replacing ic & resistors

Did you replace the resistors when you replaced the convgence chips? If one of them was bad you would still have the problem.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos.

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick email and they will put one together for you. Their kits includes photo instruction guides, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

If you have a color (red, green or blue) that is bowed inward from any side, then one of your convergence IC's has cracked loose or burned out. There is no way to fix that manually - the IC and possibly a resistor must be resoldered or replaced, and that should be handled by someone experienced in repairing and realigning convergence circuits.

Green Wavy Lines, and lower Convergence Issue

Before you call for help is a good idea if you check the solder conections to the convergence Ic's and resoldered them and while you are there check and resoldered any overheated areas. If the soldereing corrects the problem you will not have to worry about convergence adjustments,as long as the set is unplug you can carefully work in the chassis without having to touch the anodes of the picture tubes, stay away from them.Lets us know how it goes.
