Yes that is right, color to color turn of breaker before touching wires. green and bare copper go together.

Helping a friend install a new unit... he has 3 wires where we took out the old unit (the old unit had 4 wires) .. the (source) 3 wire is black, white & bare.... the old and new unit have black, red,...

Hello,

I suspect on teh wiring from the house the black&white will be the hot wires and the bare will be ground/neutral

use a volt meter before connecting tonew cooktop and check for;
black/bare to have 120volts
white/bare to have 120volts

if that is what you find...connect new cooktop as such;

black to black
red to (house) white

(cooktop) white and green to bare

Maytag cook top Model # CSE 9000 ADB. A red, black, blue, yellow, white, and bare copper wire come out of the unit. How do I hook it up???

each colored wire is for a seperate burner, the white wire connects to the white neutral wire the bare wire connects to the ground the red and yellow wires connect to the red wire (L1) and the black and blue wires connect to the black wire (L2). i have the same model and i connected mine this way and it's working fine. mine is also connected in a box that has a seperate fuze for each burner so you can follow the red (L1) wires to the 2 fuzes and connect your red and yellow wires to these fuzes and the follow the black (L2) wire to it's 2 fuzes and connect your black and blue wires to these fuzes. i don't know if this box is necessary or ir you can just connect directly to the wiresin a regular box and rely on the breaker but it was already there from the old cooktop i replaced so i used it. hope this helps you

I have 4 wires from the cook top and a black, white, and bare from the breaker. No instructions. My guess is white to white, green to bare, and black and red to black. Don't want to guess.

if it's 240volts and you have from the cooktop a red/black/white and green red&black are the two hot wires 120+120=240volts/white is the neutral/and green is safety ground-------as for the breaker wiresblack and white are the hot wires and the bare wire is the neutral it really shouldn't be a bare wire because even if it comes directly from the main house panel it does carry current,and by the n.e.c. white can't be used to carry power,unless it's marked at all visible locations with any color but green/check those wires and see what voltages you have before wiring to unit

Whirlpool Electric Cooktop Wiring

sound like you have a three wire setup on you house most commonly the black wire is the L1 wire or one of the hot wires and the red is the L2 wire and is also one of the hot wire in this instance your white wire would be your neutral/ground wire this would connect to the copper wire on your cook top depending on the model it would have a red wire a black wire and the copper wire but some may also have a white wire also if this is the case on a three wire setup you would attach the copper and white wires together also if needed you can goto the maufactures website and download an instalation guide.

3 wire cook top to a 4 wire outlet

Older 3 wire connectors where Wht=Neutral Ground Return, Red=One Phase Hot, Blk=Second Phase Hot, of 220VAC stove connections.

Newer Electrical code standard has a forth wire that is bare copper for a separate safety ground return.
I suggest you but a 4 wire pig tail cable for your stove top, available at Depot or Lowes, and connect 3 wires of this 4 wire cable just like the 3 wires are now connected. The 4th bare copper safety is attached to any metal part of the stove. Find a screw you can loosen to wrap it around and tighten.

COOK TOP WIRING

 You have Red and Black HOT wires and a Green Neutral - That is 220 volts. From the wall - Black is Normally HOT and White is Neutral. That is 110 volts. If that is a typical household outlet, is will only supply a demand at about 15 amps while running at 110 volts. Your Cooktop will most likely demand somewhere around 50 amps at 220 volts. - Short Answer - You will need to have a 220 volt supply line ran to the cooktop from the breaker. Easy to do but dangerous if you are unfamiliar with high voltage.
