What you saw smoke was the protection diode. I do not have one of these radios and have not worked on one yet, but most radios are the same where the protection diode is located on the pc board, one the components side, close to where the wire from the main power positive pin is soldered into the pc board.
I will have to do a little research to see if I can come up with the number of the diode. I have a couple of diagrams and a schematic from cbtricks.com. If I can not located it from their informaiton, I can contact my supplier Monday to see if he can tell me the number. If you happen to located the burnt diode before I come up with the information, please respond so I will know.

- After reviewing the schematic, I see that the protection diode will be D244. If you are good at soldering, you can pick one up from Radio Shack. The typical part number I use from Parts Express is 1N4007. I do not know which one Radio Shack will carry. Just make sure it is a 1n400*. It will be called a rectifier diode. Make sure when you replace it that you observe the direction of the arrow when you pull the old one out. Thesea are blocking diodes and have to be installed the correct direction.
If you need any more assistance, please let me know. Also, if this fixes the problem or not, please reply.
One more thing, when looking at the Main PC Board Layout, D244 is located at the right rear corner. Here is a link to the cbtricks.com pc board layout.
http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/rflimited/delforce/graphics/deltaforce_main_pcb.pdf
Look at the top right corner and find J101. Now look at the left bottom corner of J101 and you will see D244.
