Washing maching won't rinse in cold water

I recently purchased a (used) washing maching. I took it home and hooked it up. It washes just fine with cold water, but when it starts to rinse(again in cold water) it seems to freeze up and no water comes out at all

Hi is this hot and cold water piped machine? ie two connections on rear of machine for hot and cold pipes ? if so are your pipes connected properly on machine and the water supplies? if cold supply is connected to hot supply then wash inlet allows water in washer then washes in cold? but when rinse is due? the elec valve that has hot water pipe connected?? is failing to open allowing water flow of hot on rinse so advise recheck pipes for flow of water from both? when disconnected from machine if flow ok then possible valve blocked/faulty hope you can understand above? if you can give more info on your machine it would help to offer a remedy?

ABSOLUTELY! Purchase a 'Y' adapter from your local hardware store and attach the hot and cold lines on the washer to the 'Y' attached to the cold faucet. You won't be able to wash in warm or hot without changing the hoses, though.

The cold water is not working

Most likely the solenoid on the cold water side has failed. The water inlet valve must be replaced as a unit. They are inexpensive and easy to replace. Here is a link that should help http://appliancehelponline.com/topwaterinletvideo.html

NO WATER INTAKE WHILE RINSE OPTION IS ON

It sound like the cold water inlet valve is faulty, the rinse cycle uses only cold water, and the water in the 'wash' cycle is probably hot.You need a new inlet valve, which on your machine is probably a double hot/cold unit.If you can't get a new inlet valve, a handyman/electrician may be able to change the wiring to use the 'hot' inlet valve for cold water which will allow the machine to wash, and rinse, using cold water through the hot valve..Tikka?...Good luck...Nomess

No cold rinse, only hot

Either the wires have come loose on the water valve or you have a defective water valve.Open the lid and look at the water valve. Are all wires connected?
If yes, replace the water valve.

Rinse cycle, water won't work

It sounds like you either use warm or hot water for the wash cycle. If this is the case, you probably have a cold water solenoid problem on your water inlet valve (also known as a mixing valve on some washers). Most people use warm or hot water on the wash cycle. The water inlet valve has two solenoids. One for hot and one for cold. It uses a combination of the hot and cold solenoids to make warm water. The rinse cycle on most washers is a cold water rinse only, however. This would explain why the water appears to flow normally when it fills during the wash, and only trickles when it rinses. If you live in an area that has hard water, or if you use well water, these valves commonly clog with sediment. You can shut off the water, remove the hoses, and attempt to clean the sediment screens to see if the water flow improves. If it doesn't, you will need to replace the valve. The following link epxlains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r600647-replacing_water_inlet_valve_kenmore

I know the link says this is for a Kenmore or Whirlpool, but also applies to a Roper. A replacement valve can be ordered on line at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in the model number and the part you need is located under the "Controls and Rear Panel" heading as item number 18 (part #285805). This is a very simple and inexpensive fix if you wish to perform the repairs youself. Not to mention, you can potentially will save hundreds by avoiding the labor charges of a service call. I hope this helps you. If you require additional assistance, please let me know. Hopefully, a good cleaning will do and you won't require parts.

Following up my comment from yesterday, I took the machine apart and discovered that the black rubber cover on the valve that releases the cold water had perished and cracked, and wasn't opening properly.
I tested the hot and cold solenoids and everything checked out ok. Was just the cold valve sticking.
The wash cycle was working because I was using hot/warm water. As the rinse cycle needs cold water to get started, it was not working and the rinse and spin cycles wouldn't complete.
I have swapped the valves over for now (put the working hot one on the cold side and am using cold water only). It's working while I order a replacement...
