First unplug power and leads including internet, then you will need a screw driver to get the side cover off, make sure to touch a bare metal piece to prevent static discharge. unclip the sata cable and power from the hard drive, unscrew the fixture screws holding the hard drive in place, remove and replace with new hard drive....or of you are adding another for extra storage look for a vacant bay to house the new drive, there should be a spare power lead for the drive but you may need to purchase another sata lead if you dont have one, attatch the sata lead to the motherboard then attatch the other end to the hard drive then the power lead. Close the lid and re-boot, the new drive should be picked up by windows 7 or vista, if you have installed a new drive with no operating system you will need a bootable op disc Cheers
The audio cable from the DVD drive to the audio port on the motherboard is probably not connected. There is 3 cables that goes to the DVD drive, 1 is power, 2 is the data cable that goes to the motherboard and 3rd is the audio cable that also goes to the motherboard
you may come across few terms like "bare drive", "OEM", then there are regular ones. "bare drive" doens't come with wires(sata data & power connector), same with OEM- no wires, keep in mind OEM is genrally for resellers but i don't think anyone cares (:-) ).. since you are replacing the drive you have you can get by with any or these types. bare drive & OEM tend to be bit cheaper in price.
Did you connect the drive to cable spot closest to the motherboard on the primary IDE channel? is it formatted? Did you try the drive on the Second IDE channel? Can your system support a 160 GIG drive?(if not try partitioning the drive.). Is the power and data cable connected properly?(the red line on the data cable should be closest to the power plug on the drive.)
I had one like this if you hook up to the wrong ports (data in my instance) the Pc sometimes list it as two part drives, instead of disk? What I did was to hook up with the drives on the IDE hookups. So if you will check your cables, make sure you are not connected to the IDE side. Some PCs are tough, you have to find extentions to make the connections for your new disk.It is easier with a desktop ,because of larger parts.Any time you are adding drives ? You always add to the string of drives that are installed.Anytime you are adding disk, the same applys. You will be relived too know that most of the new PCs have the sata type connections.
make sure you pc is turned off before you start. To add additional internal hard drive you will need to get SATA hard drive. when you open up your pc there will be a slot to put it in. on the new hard drive there will a display with shows you how to make that hard drive a slave. move the little thing to the right place and plug it in. when you restart it should read it .
You need to go the bois settings.... be careful there of you don't know what your doing.
The smaller cable is SATA and the one you are trying use is IDE.. your computer is set to SATA primary drive. You need to go to advanced seeting and change some seeting around to accept the IDE as primary. Please be careful you could end up messing your system if you don't know what you are doing. Please all the changes when you make them.
Please me know if you need telephine support at the time you do these changes.
