Question about Freeplay Energy Summit AM/FM/SW Radio

1 Answer

Locked radio? I have a freeplay radio, and only have a manual i downloaded on the internet. The radio seems to be locked. The time flashes, and keeps (the wrong) time. And the light works. That's it. Is there a way I can re-set it? Is it an unfixable fault? Help! I'm moving to mozambique in 5 days and would like to take the radio with me!!

Re: locked radio?

I h ad the same problem which I took of the two black plastic caps removed the five screws which splits the radio in two pieces. Just follow the leads from the battery and disconnect the plug on the board until you lose the display then put every thing back together and reproggram it again.

It says 'lock' on the screen and does not operate at all. How do you unlock?

This can happen if the Hold or Lock switch is in ON position. Watch is there is any Hold or Lock switch at any side of of your radio. If found then just slide it to off position. If the Hold or Lock button is in ON position it will deactivate all the other switches.

When turning the crank, the spring slips, and the crank flies back to original position. Spring will not wind up.

One day while cranking the freeplay PLUS Radio on a job site with no power, something inside snapped, and made a horrid grinding noise. All of my co - workers laughed. From then on I only used the radio with the AC plug in adapter.
After 8 years of keeping the freeplay plugged in to listen to it I finally decided to open it up and take a look.
Low, and behold I found some broken pieces that looked like a belt. HMMM?
After a little more investigating I found the 2 drive wheels that power the generator... with no belt on them. I looked in my junk drawer, and found a small blue rubber band amongst the others that I save from packaging items. It looked suitable to do the task. After stretching it around the generator drive wheels, I cranked it up, and IT WORKED!
I'm still waiting to see how long this fix works, but in a pinch... keep some rubber bands and a phillips head screwdriver around. This may be the same problem your having. I'm now getting the long lost last laugh.

Hope this helps! KMT

Freeplay S360 Need Replacement Battery Pack

I will give my info here and say that I -was- able to replace the battery in my Freeplay S360. I purchased two of the 2/3 AA rechargable NiCD batteries and soldered them together. Then I rewired it into the radio and voila! It works! Total cost: about US $4 Total time: about 20 minutes Now all I need to do is remember to use the thing every month or so, just to keep the battery in good condition.

The AM frequencies are not correct cant change

For many years now AM transmissions have been in multiples of 9kHz starting at 531kHz on the Medium Waveband and usually ending at 1620kHz. Some 'illegal' transmissions may be 'off ' these official frequencies!

Original Freeplay windup radio.

Can't help you with the aerial. Mine made the same noise when winding down and I fixed that by pouring talcum powder around the windup section. Let it unwind and allow the talcum to go in,,,, and more grinding noises.

Spring broken?

Solution #2 is correct. My Baygen Freeplay radio was running fast and mine had a broken belt. I could not find a belt on eBay. After hours of searching the internet, I fond a replacement belt at I have the older large Baygen Freeplay radio without solar power and this is the belt that fit my radio... AV-SBS9.5 Replaces SBX9.5 & 1407-36 & SCX9.5 square 9.5 x .047" belt, Baygen Freeplay. Just search the website above... they also have a second size Baygen belt that might fit the newer Baygen Freeplay radios???
