Heat pumps generate heat from compressing freon and take a while to generate enough heat to be useful. never expect robust heat from a pump like an oil burner or a gas furnace, but they do heat great and are cheaper to operate. do this . if you are still using an old mercury bulb stat change it to a digital one. this will hold an exact temperature and time off between cycles will be less and the indoor coil will stay warm between short cycles, with an old mercurry stat you set it at 70 and it may run up to 73 and stay off till 68. thats a long off cycle and when call resumes the coil has gotten cold and has to start all over again. also dont wait till it gets cold to run a heat pump. turning it on and off as it gets cold is not correct. you should select a temp ,usually 71 for heat and set it and leave it on to do its thing.you may want to check the charge. hot gas discharge is usually 100 degreees hotter than outdoor temps after 15 minutes run time. for example if its 40 outside the big freon line outside thats insulated should be about 140 degrees. or you can run it 15 minutes and grab it with your hand . it should be almost uncomfortable to hold any length of time. careful some get quite hot. you also have the option of hooking up the electric strip to automatically come on if you push the stat up 2 degrees hotter than the temp in the room. that way you get heat pump and strips till temp gets within 2 degrees of set point and the strips shut off and pump maintains.good luck

almost ever tech man you post this question to think that we are not use to a heat pump and how it works. We know they will not feel like a open flame. What this guy is talking about is EXCESS of cool air before the heat box and duct work heat up. There is no way to regulate the unit to heat up the duct work except from the air that comes from the heat box. However there must be a way to delay the fan untill the heat in the box is sufficient. IN the gas heated units there is a temperature switch in side the heat box that will not activate the fan untill heat in box is sufficient and will cut off fan when it cools. ELDON 3R has a unit that for some reason or another the fan comes on premature and that may be commom to the Goodman Units. I have a Goodman gsh130361 that is less than 2 yrs old and my wife has griped ever winter because when the fan kicks in the room gets colder for 40 -60 seconds . We have lived in homes with heat pumps for 20 years and this is the only one that freezes you with cold air before it heats up. Goodman needs to adress this problem, as more people learn about this from their frinds, neighbors and installers, they may seek another brand when purchasing a unit. If anyone figures this problem out and has a solution please e-mail me a@ jbhicksdalton.net my heat and air man has had no luck in 3 trips to my house.

as most ac units are capillary tube control not tx valve having matched units is critical. as for cost the condensing unit is much more complex and expensive than the evaporator.

Goodman gph1348m41ac unit is blowing cool air in heat mode with mid 30s ambient outdoor temp. I turn it off then on and will usually blow warm air but this cycle is becoming more repetitive. any expert...

A heat pump on the optimal heating day (about 50 degrees ambient) will only deliver approximately 85 degree air as compared to 125 degree air from a fossil fueled furnace. The colder the outdoor air is the less heat there is available to be transferred to the living space. At 30 degrees, the heat transfer capability is getting close to negligible meaning the run cycles will be approaching continuous and eventually as the heat pump along cannot maintain setpoint, the outdoor stat or stats will bring on auxilliary heat in the air handler.

If your ambient temp is below the 'balance point' of the heat pump, the house temp will drop a little lower and most times energize the heat strips through the outdoor t-stat. Your outdoor stat could be set too low for the heat pump to carry the structure all the way down to the balance point so when you turn it off and back on, the lower indoor temp automatically brings on the heat pump plus a heat strip or two, thus the warmer air. Second stage on the stat satisfies due to the heat strip, drops them out of the circuit and the heat pump is left running on first stage heat delivering the perceived cold air.

Your outdoor stat could also be not functioning correctly and not allowing the heaters to come on until the system is turned back on reestablishing the two stage call for heat.

Tons of possibilities and not enough room to list....

3 ton heat pump with piston in air handler. After unit shuts down it makes loud fluid flow noise for about 2 minutes

adding a tvx will not help. the sound you here is the pressure equalizing and that has got to happen for the compressor to start again the next time. A tvx will give you a higher efficiency because it can adjust to changing temperature conditions. Only way i know to quiet the noise is to try to insulate the lines better.

Blower on heat pump blowing with no demand

There is a contact in the blower control card that can stick on. There is also a possibility that the green wire which starts the blower motor could be shorting out with the red wire somewhere inside the thermostat wire. If that is the problem, either pull new thermostat wire, (the rest of the insulation is probably breaking down) or there is some new red link controllers from Honeywell that will completely eliminate wire because the controls are all wireless.

I HAVE A GOODMAN MODEL CKL36-1D I'M TRYING TO FIND OUT THE SEER RATING ON THIS MODEL.CAN ANYONE HELP?

Your going to need to know the age of the unit. If its less than 5 years old, its most likely a 13 SEER. If its anything more than 5 years old, its most likely a 10 SEER. If its anything over 10 years old, its most likely an 8 or 6 SEER.

Remember, that a unit will loose an average of 1-2 SEER for every full year of operation. This is just due to age, wear and tear, and usage.

So, if its a 10 SEER unit that is 7 years old, you could say that it is about as efficient as something in the 4-6 SEER range.

Extremely long time to get cool air with 5 ton 13 seer goodman heat pump which is 3 years old.

Check your filter. Make sure it is clean. Make sure the outdoor unit is operational. (power on). Clean your condenser coil with a garden hose. If possible check your evaporator coil. If it is dirty clean it. Your furnace (or air handler) blower speed should be set on high. All of your registers (supply & return) should be open and unobstructed. Check for proper thermostat settings. If none of this information solves your problem , then your units charge needs to be checked. You could be over or undercharged with freon.
Good luck......

1997 Amana 2 or 2.5 ton heat pump, 13 seer - air handler only blows 4-5 min

do you have a totaline t-stat. they and some other brands have a fan recirculation setting in the installers menu.

this is assuming that this happens in addition to the heating or cooling normally
