Question about Samsung SyncMaster 713BM 17" LCD Monitor
If you have been running System Restore to create backup configuration files, try this before attempting the procedure below:
- Click on Start
- Click on run to open the window
- Type the word 'restore' and then OK - This will open a folder with the UI program in it, on my system (XP on auto update) named 'rstrui.exe' - double click on this.
- With the Restore window open, the default will be 'Restore my computer to an earlier time'
- Click on 'Next'
You should now have a calendar on the screen and (hopefully) some calendar dates in bold
Select one that occurred before you zapped your sound driver.
Restore does not tamper with files or documents you have created but will put system files back where they belong if lost for any reason.
If you still haven't recovered your sound facilities, follow the steps below.
Open the Control Panel, then System, click onHardware, then Device Manager.
Scan down the list and open (click on the + ifnot already open) the Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
You should see a number of generic terms and atleast one that is obviously a company name.
There may be an 'X' next to it indicating thatit isn't functional.
Regardless whether it is marked as defective ornot, right click on the entry. This will bring up a short menu.
Left click on Properties.
If the system thinks your device is working, itwill say so under the General tab and will either state that it is working oroffer troubleshooting help.
At this point, note the maker of the sound chip;you may need it later.
If the chip (it is almost certainly on the mainboard) is responding, then open the Sounds and Audio devices find the maker'sname under the Hardware tab, delete it and then reboot your PC.
Win should 'find' a 'new device' and try to finda driver from its library.
If it fails to find one, it will ask for thechip's CD (installation software).
If you don't have one, you will have to go tothe manufacturer's website and download a new driver. Be sure to note its nameand put it where you can find it again.
Reboot again and (hopefully) Win will 'find' itagain and then when asked for a driver, you can direct it to the new driver.
It is wise to have a very complete system report that will give you about 4 pages of information about your system.

Run it and save the report on a backup disk (or print it out) soit is accessible when your system is down.
Having this report handy when Wintel or AMD systems are goingnuts is a good place to start troubleshooting.
