Go to Settings > SOUND > Silent mode (No sounds except media and alarms). If this is ticked (on), it means umts smartphone alarm will sound even if you make the phone silent. Regarding the loud sound even after reducing ringer volume, no idea for this.
I always tell people NOT to buy new batteries to try and fix their cordless phone. It seems to rarely solve the problem and you are usually better off just spending the money on a new phone.
Unfortunately 5 years is a long time for cordless phones these days.
