SOUND PROBLEM SIR/MA`AM, I tried to play music on my sony vaio laptop with windows media player... and I got this message ....Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

SOURCE: windows media player cannot play

If you are able to hear sound while starting PC issue is not with sound card. that is installed and working properly. If you are clicking on any file that is not playing then window media player is not supporting that file. If you are directly opening window media player from start>>Program>>access>>>>window player and it is giving error. It mean that your player is corrupted. You can upgrade that with higher version of player by going this link.

SOURCE: Sound Driver

Your sound device is either damaged or has no driver installed. Look in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager for yellow marks.
You'll find the driver at the Compaq site.
I can't help you further without a model number.

SOURCE: windows media player cannot play

I have an Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D7830. I was updating chipsets to the laptop when it bluescreened. I had to reformat the HDD and reinstalled Windows Xp Pro SP2. Since then I have installed every conceivable Windows Update file there is and have updated all other drivers and chipsets. However, my soundcard is no longer working.

When clicking on the device in question in the device management screen, the following error messages are displayed for the Realtek AC'97 soundcard: This device cannot start. (Code 10), PCI bus 0, device 31, function 5.

I have attempted at downloading and installing almost every drive I can find for this device, and have followed the standard Microsoft help routines. i.e. uninstalling the device and reinstalling the device still with no luck.

I hope you will be able to assist, as my last resort will be to take it into the a techie shop i.e. PC World for them to have a look at it.

Kind regards,

Please backup the data by logging in to Safe Mode, please restart and start pressing F8 key to select Safe Mode then re-install the Windows 7 Operating System using the Recovery Disc or recovery Partition of the Hard Drive. The Recovery Partition can be accessed by restarting the computer and try pressing F10 Key. The Windows XP Operating System is displaying an error because it does not have SATA Driver to detect the Hard Drive. As Windows 7 has it, you can re-install it from recovery partition.
