5/3 cannot be represented exactly. Break it up into two parts, (-8)^5 then take the cube root. Be aware that their are three roots.

If the result is positive, type in the integer part then add the fraction part either with the help of the fraction key or the division key. (I do not think that the TI82 has a fraction key.

If it is anything like the TI3 there is command under MATH >Frac. It should be pressed after you enter the mixed number to keep the result as a fraction.

If the mixed number is negative you enclose the whole number in parentheses. Press the change sign (-) key to negate the result.

Be sure to use the (-) key (just to the right of the decimal point) to enter the negative exponent, not the - key you use for subtraction.

Well, there are 2 ways, the easy way and the hard way, and I will give both.

EASY: the [+/-] button should be near the [ENTER] button

"HARD": type in "0" and then subtract the number that you want negatave and "FixYa!"

P.S. If this solved your problem please rate it as best answer.

Hello ronsky123. I sorry no parts from TI for TI-82. You may find one for sale by an indivdual or one with a different malfunction & put 1 + 2= 1. Good Luck.
