not sure how I check the destination folder

  • digan Nov 01, 2008

What do you mean by Windows Task Scheduler service disable

  • digan Nov 01, 2008

I only purchased it in Jan 2007 - would have thought it would last longer than that!

  • digan Nov 01, 2008

Does this mean there is no warranty on the Maxtor one touch backup and if it only lasts such a short time what is the point in my having such a device if I can't rely on it

  • digan Nov 01, 2008

Is there any warranty on the Maxtor One external drive and can it be replaced or do I have to purchase a new one

Sir,

Its time to get a new hard drive. If you have any data that you want to take backup you need to contact some local tech shop for the same.

The drive has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Thanks

Hi,

Your post "scratching sound" indicates a mechanical fault on the actual hard drive. often this would be the read/write head touching the spinning platter(s). Often this is a non repairable problem as the scratching sound really causes scratches on the discs making them unusable.

The error message "destination not accessible" simply signifies that the Maxtor One Touch is no longer recognized by your computer. In essence, it no longer exists, however, you system has noted that it has made a back up on that storage device on such and such date.

Offhand, this is one of those problems that have no remedy but a replacement. Even recovery is a big question mark, sorry.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Depending on the version that you have and what model of HD was installed, the platters would spin at 5,400; 7,200 or even 10,000 RPM. Considering these speeds, any jarring, sudden mechanical act, falling over, thump could and would cause spikes and mechanical defects.

Repair is possible, but that would require replacing the internal hard drive. This page would give you insights on how to replace the defective HD.

Warranty would depend on the applicable warranty system in place of your dealer, point of purchase and even country.

    Your queries:

    • Is there any warranty on the Maxtor One external drive - all have warranties, the question is how long. Depends on the store/dealer where you bought it from. What does the warranty card says?

    • can it be replaced - if replace you mean the entire unit, I doubt that. If replace you mean just the hard drive, please see this page;

    • do I have to purchase a new one - you best bet would be to consider cost of a new one versus cost of replacing just the hard drive + service fees. Then a decision could be arrived at based on that.

It is now defective , and no updates or checking the destination folder is going to help at this point if you just bought it then return it for a new one
if this is not new you need to get another one , and don't leave it in because this can cause more problems to your pc and cause freeze up or slow function of pc or worse

its a maxtor! you can't expect a cheap manufacturer like maxtor to last

and if it gets hot inside your computer( not clean , no system fan , inadequate ventilation)other parts of your computer will fail also

  • jason Nov 01, 2008

the only thing you can do is start taking the info of the hard drive before it completely quits

not all of maxtor hard drive just quit that soon but knowing that maxtor is a cheap maker of hard drives , makes one buy a good known brand that will last , but even that is not a for sure thing as they all can quit for a reason that is in the stucture of the components that make it work

sometimes you van buy a cheap one that will last a long time and sometimes you can get an exspensive that will just quit , it is usaly just luck that determines if it will last a long time as well as keeping the computer as clean as posible to keep parts from breaking down

but sometimes they just were not made as good as the rest of them( mistakes , poor manufacturing of the device)

sorry but this has probably happend to us all , it did to me!

Try to check the hard drive inside. If you can re-seat the hdd inside that's better. Now for the back up, check the actual destination folder and verify if the data has been saved. If not, updating the firmware of the device will fix the problem.

Try to plug the hard drive to another computer and check if you can still recover the missing data that you want. Less likely, if your system can still detect the hard drive, las thing you can try is to reformat the drive.

Of course there's a warranty for the device since you've been using it for just few months. You can claim your warranty. Call the Maxtor people and claim your warranty. I believe it has 3 years warranty.

The scratching sound is usually a bad disk head or a bad motor, fixing it is very expensive.

Scratching of clicking sound from an hard disk drive is usually caused by bad disk heads or a bad motor, when this happens we say that the hard drive is physically damaged.

If the Hard disk did not contain important data, you fix this replacing the internal disk.

If the Hard disk did contained important data, then the only way to recover them is through an expensive intervent, as working on the inside of hard disk require a facility called Clean Room , that is an environment where dust is removed completely from air using a vacuum.

The recovery is usually not less than $800

For example this is the service that I use, as I fix computers but I have not my own clean room:

How do I start making my Maxtor start backing yp

Do you want to create a backup file or do you want to keep your original files saved on your Maxtor? If you want to create a backup file for the files on your computer, type "ntbackup" in the "Run", the backup wizard will automatically start and click "next" > "backup fies and settings" > "Let me choose what to backup" and then select the files and folders you want to backup by click the snap-ins (+ signs) and check mark the files or folders and again "next". In the option "choose a place to save your backup" click "browse" (if you are prompted that the drive A:\ is empty click "cancel") locate your Maxtor directory, click "Ok" and name the backup file something you like, click "next", the backup process will begin with the status monitor. It may take several minutes depending on the files you've selected. That's all. If you wanna restore the backup files, just double click the backup file you've saved and when the wizard opens, select "restore files and settings" and follow the onscreen instructions.
Good luck.

It's possible something was damaged on the interface board inside the case, or on the drive itself. If you listen to the drive and it sounds like it's spinning up normally when you turn on the power, it's probably the board. I haven't had it happen yet on my WD external drives (I have two), but I have seen 3 Maxtor brand external drives with that problem. The drive itself was fine when put into another external case.

When I plug in the Maxtor it does not give me a choice to back up files.

you need to make sure backup software is installed also. Dont assume plugging it in will make it operate completely. If you give me the model number of the maxtor, and perhaps the backup sofware version your using i can assist you further.

You most likely are running Windows Vista, which Maxtor has created an update for Maxtor Backup to work flawlessly in Vista.

You can find it on their site.

Hmmm. Are you absolutely certain that you have the latest updates or service packs applied to your machine. Something in my mind reminds me of an update Microsoft issued to correctly identify and use these large capacity drives correctly.

Whenever I use my Maxtor Onetouch 3 I have quite a loud whirring noise with it.

This is probably normal, some hard drives are noisier than
others, and the tend to get louder as they get older.

The old Maxtor drives were very loud and quite unreliable,
but I have not tested their new ones.
(once burned, twice shy)

Personally I prefer Seagate. I have 8 Seagate drives in a single
machine including a RAID, and they perform very well.

They are also much quieter than Western digital or Maxtor.

Finally, whirring is OK, grinding is not. If it is louder than
you feel comfortable with, erase is with a secure file wiper,
such BC wipe by Best Crypt, and then take it back to where
you bought it (give them hell)

Also if the drive suddenly got a lot louder than it was before,
this could mean that the spindle bearings are gone and you
need to replace it before you loose all data on it.

Also, if this is used only as a backup drive, as the manufacturer
intended, then you should power it down when you are not using it.

Before turning of the power switch on the drive, though, make
sure that Windows has completed and committed all the
pending write-back cycles. Click on the green arrow on
you task-bar /icon tray: and click "Safely Remove Drive"
windows will then tell you when its safe to turn off the drive.

Hope this helps, please rate my answers.

When i connected my Maxtor basics 160 for the first time 2 weeks ago i recall a prompt asking me to backup all files (or something similar)which i did. I recall another prompt saying this was successful....

You probably backed them up to the same hard drive that they were on. If you plug in your maxtor hard drive to another machine and it shows it as being empty... this would be my best guess.

Most drives come with backup software that automates the process(as best it can) so that you can one click backup your documents and files(not your operating system).

I prefer to copy and paste my files and do my own backups, but backup software is an easy solution for the do-it-yourself.

Download and run maxtor powermax, when you run the program it will idenify your hard drives, select your one touch and run the recertify, this will not erase anything but will run a complete diagnostic and attempt recovery of data to recertify as good. If the drive fails I have recovery software I can e-mail you.
