You will either need an external cd rom or transfer all of your music and pictures onto a flash drive using a different computer.

Depending on what your computer has for a drive, DVD or CD, makes the difference in the answer. However, you will be safe with either drive using CD-R, CD+W

DVD OR CD not drive by CD-ROM

Option One:
To fix it, open “My Computer”, or “Windows Explorer”, find the drive icon for your CD/DVD player/burner and right-click on it. When the popup menu opens, choose, “Properties”. Click on the “Auto Play” tab. Click on “Select an Action to Perform”. Click on the “Restore Defaults” button and click on the “Apply” button. Then click on “Prompt me each time to choose an action” and click on the “Apply” button again. (Note: If you want it to open in a particular program each time you put in your music CD, instead of clicking on “Prompt me…” choose the program you want it to open each time you put in your CD. Now click on “Apply” and “OK” and restart your computer. Now put in a music CD and see if it works as it should.

How to replace my faulty DVD drive

Hey,

In most acer laptops you can remove the dvd drive by removing one screw from the bottom of the laptop. that will free the dvd drive and you can pull it out.

Security software

You don't need a DVD drive but at least a CD drive for music will work. If you don't have that you can download almost all virus software. While you are researching this online you could download microsoft defender from the microsoft site. It's an okay program and free. When choosing software be sure you get free updates for a long time.

Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-840S Problem

CD drives work by reflecting a laser to a sensor, where the existance or absence of a reflected signal corresponds to a 1 or a 0 in the binary code.

Prefessional "pressed" CD have a much greater level of "contrast" between 1 and 0, while CD-Rs have a lower contrast and CD-RWs lower still. This is why many older CD players that were not designed to read CD-Rs will either not read writable disks, or will read only CD-Rs and not CD-RWs.

Since you are able to read "high contrast" CDs but not lower contrast CD-Rs, it sounds as though your drive is getting a poorer signal than it did when it was new. This could be:

The laser is old and fading out.
The system is mis-aligned.
The lens is dirty and the signal is not all passing through to be detected.

You can't do much about the first two, other than buying a new drive (you could get a replacement internal one, or an external USB CD drive). However, before you do that, try very carefully cleaning the lens. A laptop CD drive usually has a try with the lens mounting in it which spits out with the CD, so you could either clean it manually with a little rubbing alcohol (isoproyl alcohol), or meths on a cotton-wool bud, or preferably get a lens-cleaning CD and run that in the drive.

Hope it works!

Wallmart acer!!!!!!!!!

tomgeer, Acer put a program on the notebook so you can create the recover CD's. You must have received you're notebooks with Vista.
You're CD players are fine, the problem is Vista. Check windows update service within you're notebooks. There might be a fix from MS.
