I had one of these external drives from the same manufacturer and had the exact same problem.

Based on my own experience I would suspect the enclosure has died.

The drive inside of mine was completely functional.

I simply mounted the drive in another enclosure.

Remove the drive from its current enclosure, but be aware this will void the warranty.

You can test the drive before you buy another enclosure by installing it into your computer per the computer manufacturer's instructions.

If you install it proprly and you don't need it as an external drive, you can simply leave it installed.

However, if you need it as an external drive, unistall it from the computer and install it into an external enclosure.

Here is a link for a place to buy external enclosures. Make sure you get the right kind of enclosure for your hard drive either ATA (IDE) or SATA. Choose one that has a USB2.0 or Firewire connection, if your computer has the available ports.

The Vantec Nexstar 3 line are solid performers and have never given me any trouble.

As far as the actual physical installation into the enclosure, its a piece of cake. Just read the directions; you should have no problem.

Is it formatted as NTFS? What OS on the PC? What program did you download since it should not be required?

Sounds like the drive is broken or the cable. Does the power light on the drive light up?

ry connecting the external hard drive to another computer to recover/backup your data.
When you have such a large capacity hard drive, it pays to have a second large capacity hard drive to backup your data in the event of the other hard drive dying.Hard drives do fail especially if you accidently drop it.

I have a 500g external simple drive. i am getting a message that i can only read on my mac.

Copy all the data onto your Mac computer.

Take the external drive to a PC computer, and "reformat" it, using "quick format".

Take the external drive back your Mac computer,
and write all the "saved" files onto the drive.

My lacie mounts on the g5 but when i click it, it doesn't open.

It would be a good idea to look at the Mac system log so from a v bad memory do...click Apple (top laft hand corner) then about this Mac then System Profiler then Logs and take a look and see what errors you are getting. If this doesnt give you any clues my advice with external disk problems is where possible to remove the disk from the enclosure and install it in the Mac. if you can, THis will eliminate the USB cable, interface, and box. See if it mounts then. If it does run disk utility to double check it but get your data off first onto the Mac. Hope this helps....Mark

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.
