Question about Philips Magnavox 27MS343S 27" TV

2 Answers

Tv has wavey pic in center (random every 4 minutes)

Suddenly our Magnavox fs2550-a101 counsel tv started to show a distorted wavy picture in the center, of and on and quite frequently. I used the VCR to and the same thing happens. It's a nice TV and Mom is not sure if she can afford to have it repaired and would like to know if someone can estimate if this could be big cost or little cost to her. I replaced the circuit board for the remote sensor about 4 years ago and could be able to follow instructions on a simple repair. Any advise would be appreciated. If she knew it would be under $150, she may call for service.

Techman, thanks for the reply, I can't post a pic for you, but I have some more information. It's my mothers 25" counsel TV. The TV's picture distorts and stretches the picture mainly in the center of the screen. It would appear to look wavy, then will snap back and look normal. The distortion/waves last for about 1 minutes, and as frequently as every 2 minute. I opened the back of the tv and started turning knobs. I found that there in an assembly with 2 adjustment knobs on it. The top knob reads FOCUS and the lower knob reads SCREEN. (screen adjustment and focus adjustment) I turned the SCREEN adjustment knob and the distortion went away for a few minutes. Now the TV will only distort maybe for a 20 seconds and once every 10 minutes. I am wondering of you can estimate how much this could cost to fix or pinpoint what the problem is for us.

Inside older (non-hd) televisions there is an electron gun of sorts that fires at each pixel to determine which color it displays. Usually normal distortion happens at the far left and/or right of the screen. Distortion in the center (to me anyway) sounds like it points to a pretty serious malfunction. The fact that it is not constant leads me to believe that any amount of screen adjustment wouldn't permenantly solve the problem. If you're lucky you could just have to replace a capacitor, but the problem could be as deep as the tube itself. If it's worth it to you to either get an estimate, or if you're mechanically enclined enough, to track down a copy of the service manual and diagnose the problem yourself.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture distorts randomly and resolves by turning off and back on

Well its probably gonna hurt your feelings and your wallet because its gonna be a powerboard problem which will cost a pretty penny or your lamp which will cost around $200. Try and take it in to a serviceman and itll be around 60-70 bucks just to look at it. HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE YOUR TV? remember people need parts too. you could make some money on ebay for the parts if you decide to hit up the sale.

I SEE DOUBLE THE PICTURE AT THE TOP LEFT IS WAVEY

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com
