DVD/CD-ROM not recognised

posted by moralino on Sep 18, 2006

Hi,
The DVD/CD-ROM device of my 5100U pc notebook is no more recognised by the operating system.
How can I confirm that it is definitely dead? If so, can anybody give me a site where I can order a new one?
Thanks in advance!
Moralino

I can't find much information on this model from the web-site, so I'll make a few generic guesses.

Can you see the DVD drive in the Device Manager?

To access the Device Manager, right click on My Computer and select Manage. Select Device Manager from the Computer Management window. Do you see the optical drive under DVD/CD-ROM drives?

If you do, then try putting a different CD or DVD in the drive.

If you do not, then try shutting the laptop off, ejecting the drive from the laptop and then re-seating it in the laptop. This of course will only work if the drive is modular, which most laptops in the last few years have. Power the laptop back on and check the device manager again.

If you still can't see it, then there are two possibilities.

1) The CD/DVD drive is bad.
2) The connection on the motherboard is bad for the CD/DVD drive

In either case, both motherboards and cd/dvd drives are customized in laptops for every vendor, so you will have to contact yours in order to get a replacement.

unistall the drivers for the dvd and restart the machine. when it starts back up, they should load up automaticall. check the staus at this point.
if no joy, go to boot menu and check to see if its regonised. either way reset the bios and check to see if this works. if still no jo go yo www.vaio-link.com and you can update your drivers here. if still no joy you may need to have it repaired.
