The tub appears to spin pretty fast with lid open and safety switch tripped but clothes come out wetter than usual. I have checked for water left in the tub and its empty right after spin cycle. Replaced timer. Seems to be worse with larger loads. I checked clutch for resistance and it has some but not real hard to hold tub while turning belt. I dont know how much resistance it should have. Could clutch be slipping a little.

the maytag runs in one direction for wash. it reverses to drain and spin - check for a broken or loose belt. maytags I have run into circa 1989 have two belts. as for the softener dispense, there may be a solenoid valve that is supposed to open. may be just a flapper type of valve. softener goes in by gravity feed.

Sounds like the brake liner could be broken. When the machine starts to spin, the motor turns in the opposite direction to the wash cycle and causes the bowl to lift off the brake liner and the bowl then spins freely. Either the riser cam is worn/broken or the brake liner is broken. This is quite involved and you may have to call in a tech.

I am also expiriencing the same situation.
I took a look at the machine and it appears to be in good working order.
But the belt does appear to be in need of replacing. I have ordered one and should find out everything will be back to normal once it is installed.
The worn belt would explain a lot.
- Light load are fine due to the lack of power needed to spin the contents.
- Heavy loads need the maximum amount of power it can get to spin.
But does not because the belt is slipping further into pulley grooves and is probably partially slipping, due to the wear.
