I understand and have worked on this model. This is essentially a notebook on a stand. The hard drive bay is behind the lcd panel and held in place by one solitary screw. Remove the little screw and carefully pull to dislodge and then pull out. The hard drive is screwed onto this slip into place mold. It needs to have four very small screws removed and then you can replace with the replacement and insert that into the back.

Computer will not boot

Does your pc make a different noise than usual when you turn it on? If it sounds like clicking (loud) then your hard drive has crashed. You will need to replace it.

I have a gateway Profile 5. when i cut it on

My understanding is that when you power on your PC, the POST is succesful, but then the system hangs.? If i am correct. There are several reasons this may happen.

1) Boot record corrupt
S) Reformat the harddrive and re-install operating system / replace hard drive

2) General Hard drive failure but boot record instact
S) Replace Hard drive

3) Operating system inoperative
S) Re-install operating system

Most pre-built systems come with recovery disks, you may try this as a solution if available.

When replacing a defective hard drive, or partialy inoperable hard drive, a good policy is to change the drive to slave, and install the new drive as master, this way any data you may be able to recover, can be done after the new hard drive is installed, and an operating system is installed on the new drive.

Download some free hard drive testing software, like seagate tools, from:  Seagate.com  or another had drive manufactor. They run from a disk w/o windows . If the hard drive checks out try reinstalling the system. Another quick test , for conformation is to hook up you monitor to anther computer just to make sure it is not the monitor. It rarely is.

MY GATEWAY PROFILE 4 ISSUES A PROBLEM WITH THE HARD DRIVE.

Bad news. Your hard drive has had a SMART failure and subsequently crashed. If your data was important, I would get the computer to a skilled professional as soon as possible. Ideally, you can get them to make an image of your drive. That will get you back to right before the crash. If they can't do that, there are data recovery places like gillware.com that can help you out for a flat fee.
