The battery charger circuit on a Dell portable will not operate using a 3rd party AC adapter. The bios automatically disables the charging circuit if an Dell Branded AC adapter is not recognized by the BIOS
Since you have verified that the card works (in your phone) and that the adapter works (in another computer), then the issue could very well be with the Sony VAIO VGN-C140G/B. More specifically, the USB ports/drivers. Presumably that the Sandisk 2Gb Micro SD & the adapter were working before and that you are using Windows Vista, pls check your updates that has anything to do with USB. Alternately, you may want to rollback/downgrade the USB drivers and/or seek USB driver update from the Sony site rather from Microsoft.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for your continued patronage of FixYa.
Was the laptop on when it turned off? It may be a PSU problem but we can determine this by removing the battery. Make sure you disconnect the AC adapter while your removing the battery. Inspect the contacts and make sure`there are no black marks or any other dirt. Leave the battery out and plug in your AC adapter. Try the power again.
There are a couple of possibilities in terms of problems that I can suspect so far. Did anything out of the ordinary happen when the computer just stopped working all of the sudden.
1. Battery has failed and short circuited the contacts
2. Power supply failure
3. Motherboard could have failed in style.
4. Power contacts for the AC adapter are damaged.
