Some keys on my dell inspiron 5100 don't want to work. the delete and left and right arrow are not working at all

I have the same problem with my 5100 keyboard.. I bought a brand new keyboard online and replace the old one, but the problem remained. If you press the defective keys very hard, they sometimes work.
This appears to be a problem with some other hardware component in the laptop (motherboard?). I just use an external keyboard now.

I also have this problem with my "I" key, I must hit it fairy hard to use it. Tried dusting out underneath and all that, however, it seems the only solution is an external keyboard.

You can try reseating the keyboard connector. If that doesn’t work, the keyboard needs to be replaced. To reseat the keyboard connector, follow this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/keyboard.htm#1084976
Be sure to remove AC power and the Battery.

Remove hdd password

You can change it but not 'remove' it. Simplest is to use '00000' as the default password.
Instructions
1 Shut down your computer.
2 Press the power button on your computer. While it is booting, press F2 repeatedly (do not just hold it down) until you arrive at a system screen showing a series of
options. This screen is called the BIOS Setup.

3 Use the down arrow key on your keyboard to scroll down to "Security" in the left-hand column.
4 Arrow right to display a sub-menu under Security in the left-hand column.
5 Arrow down to "Internal HD PW" in the left-hand column. (That stands for Internal Hard Drive Password.)
6 Delete the old password (if any) and, in the same box, enter a new password of at least four characters in length in the main screen at right.
7 Write the password down and keep it in a safe place.
8 Hit Enter.
9 Hit the Escape button on your keyboard to exit the Internal HD PW menu, then hit Escape again to proceed to the Exit screen of the BIOS Setup.
10 Arrow right to save the changes you made to the password, then hit Enter on your keyboard to exit the BIOS Setup.
11 Restart your computer and use the password you created in the BIOS Setup to gain access to your hard drive.

usb or ps2 keyboard ? might need to be enabled in BIOS

If you want to use a USB keyboard to access Windows command prompt options, make changes in the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), or to operate legacy operating systems, you must enable support for the device inside the BIOS.

Shut down the computer and disconnect the USB keyboard. Connect a PS/2 keyboard to the PS/2 connector port on the rear of the computer. Turn on the computer and press the "Delete" key several times as soon as you see the initial boot or company logo screen. Wait for the main BIOS setup screen to appear. Press the right or left arrow keys to move the cursor to the "Advanced" or "Advanced Settings" menu option. Press the "Enter" key. Move the cursor to the "Integrated Peripherals" or "Peripheral Configuration" menu option. Press the "Enter" key. Press the down-arrow key to navigate to the "USB Controllers" option. Press the "+" or "-" key to change the menu option to "Enabled." Move the cursor to the "USB Legacy Support" or "USB Legacy Function" field. Press the "+" key repeatedly until the value option changes to "Enabled." Press the "F10" key to save changes to the BIOS settings and exit the setup utility. Wait until the computer begins to restart and then press the power button and hold it for approximately four or five seconds. The computer shuts down completely. Unplug the PS/2 keyboard from the computer and set it aside. Reconnect the USB keyboard restart the computer. As soon as you see the initial boot screen, tap the "Delete" key several times and wait for the BIOS setup screen to appear. If you are able to access the BIOS setup screen with the USB keyboard, USB support is active in the BIOS.

check the arrow keys it it's also not functioning in the BIOS:
- restart the system and press F2 five times during the splash screen of the big blue DELL logo to go to the BIOS (System Setup). Then test the arrow keys.
