Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
After I start the vacumn and til it in the usual brush on position it will not engage. Note this happened after a very brief altercation with an area rug.
This is extremely embarrassing, but if I can save you some frustration, I'll gladly swallow the humble pill. I had the same problem, after vacuuming an area rug, the brushbar quit spinning. I let it cool to ambient temperature and tried again, thinking that the auxilliary motor that turns the brushbar may have overheated and tripped a thermal cutout. I even took the unit apart and inspected the brushbar motor to ensure the windings weren't damaged and that the brushes properly engaged the communtator.
Ready for the solution? There's a button right next to the power button that has a picture of a brushbar on it. Guess what it does? It turns the brushbar on and off. I cycled that switch, tried again, and: Ta-dah! It worked.

This same thing happened to us. We found out that some of the teeth on the belt were missing. We called Dyson and they sent us a free replacement belt, we put it on, and it fixed the issue. Dyson customer support is GREAT!!

Maybe needs new clutch or if bottom panel has been removed at any point belt could be trapped in belt guide

bearings in the brushroll might be siezing. If you start snapping belts, change the brushroll. the roller brush that most likely needs to be cleaned, clean the hair from the brush and under the belt and make sure the bar is positioned in the vacuum properly and turns easily. Your problem could be the clutch unit what has probably happened is either the clutch plates are warn, or the 3 balls in the clutch have warn a large grove in there fixing plate or the plastic hub that the brush roller to clutch belts runs on has melted this hub melting is the most common of all clutch faults.
There are no spares available for repairing the clutch other than the motor to clutch belt & the clutch to brush belt. Here is a diagram to help you
