OK It SOUNDS like you have problems on one of the two power boards (designated GA and GB). There are a couple of things I need you to do the next time it acts up.
1) if any lights flash, count the number of flashes. It should be a repeating cylce of so many flashes.
2) If it won't come on, unplug it for 3 or 4 minutes (to let the power supplies discharge) and then plug it back it but don't try to power it on. Count the number of clicks you hear right after you plug it in. This is very important and it tells me if one section of the supply is not coming on.
I hope this helps. Feel free to rate this solution and to award the premium solution to whomever you please.

Also, The LEDS may remain on singly or in combination. Whatever LED's light, whether they flash, or several come on together is also very important, as it is a self diagnostic built into the projector. When you get lights lit, either flashing or staying on singly or in combination be sure to tell me which LED's are lit (temp/fan led or lamp cover led) and what they are doing.

    Hubert,
Just got done discussing this with a few of my friends and I need a clarification. When I was reading your post to one of them, he questioned my assumption on one of your lines:

When I do press the on button: 10 green standby lights on orange lampcover light.

When that lamp covver light comes on, does it light steady or does it flash?
If it flashes, my prevoius information concerning the covers and switches is correct.
If it stays on steady, it is most likely either the lamp, the lamp power supply or ballast. and, in very rare chances, the lamp igniter.
Get back to me about this.
    Thanks!

PS. If you replace the lamp and it doesn't help, I may have a lamp power supply for that model.

I have sony vpl ex7 and the power button keeps on blinking?

If it blinks with 2 flashes, it's overheated. Check the filter unit.
If it blinks with 4 flashes, a fan is not working properly. see if any fan is not turning on, and check why.
If it blinks with 6 flashes, it's a system internal failure.

Sony VPL-EX3 projector on/off switch flashes green then turns red and the lamp/cover light is orange. Does this mean the lamp needs replacing or could it be caused by some other factors?

Possible that the lamp is faulty -if the hours have elapsed- check the lamp holder, the fitments.
check also the filters, clean and reset.
Make sure the power supply Unit is not having any poor soldering or faulty components to reduce the voltage output to the lamp thus making it shut down..

Why is it in black and white and not color?

reset the settings to factory default and swap out the cable. if that doesn't work, you have a processor issue on the main board. it'll need to be replaced..

Ok we're back to the flashing lamp cover LED. The green flashes you are seeing is the TV trying to start up. After it tries for awhile, it will eventually shut down and display an error code, in this case, the lamp cover LED flashing which means either the lamp cover, filter cover or main cabinet sensing switches are not closed, are intermittent or have some kind of wiring issue. A solid lamp cover light (no flashing) would point to the lamp and lamp drive, but the flashing light points to the switches. Give me an email address and I'll send you the training and troubleshooting manual so you can see for yourself. Any ther help needed, please don't hesitate to ask.
