Is this an expensive item to repair? What would prevent it from happening again? Is this a recurring problem once it begins?

5-14-09 I have similar problem. The black band is about 3-4 inches and runs top to bottom almost in the center of the screen (slightly to the left). I called Philips rep and she told me to take it to a local repair place (certified). I bought the Philips 42 PF7320A three years ago.

If this line goes from top to bottom its going to be your display there are ribbons on your tv at the botton that control vert drive the ribbon is either bad connection or most likley the display is bad take off back and gently press on ribbon where the black line is if it fills in its the ribbon if not its the display

This will need to go into the shop to get one of the video processing boards replaced that controls that part of the screen , this will happen when it gets to hot inside the set ,( thermal break down)

yes , because now the extra voltage that is supposed to be taken by that board lays on the power supply and other components

it would be advisable not to have it going while there is a problem

White band from top yo bottom of screen

Good luck with this. If it is under warranty, Sharp will take forever to do anything about it. I had this issue and Sharp wanted pictures of the problem, Pictures of the serial and model number and the receipt. I sent it to them 6 months ago and never heard anything back. If it is not under warranty, this is a major repair and it may cost more than a new television.

Disney princess tv suddenly narrowed the visible part of the screen. Now everything is squished into a two in wide band with all the rest of the screen is black.

if that 2 band according to you from top to bottom,it has a defective vertical stage.if this two band appears one on top and one at the bottom,it`s on vertical stage.leaky capacitors, resistance changed or resistor devalued ang ic`s, are too weak to amplify a signal to make the screen complete....

Panasonic TC-P42S2 .. Transparent 2 inch wide vertical discoloration on panasonic 42 inch plasma, very left of the screen.

Fixed mine, myself! Black 3 inch vertical band (stripe) appeared after a cros country move on our PC-T50G10. Occasionally we would see white band with multicolored pixel width stripes. Took the risk of taking off the back to see if I could see anything. Found places on sides and bottoms where plastic like 2" flat cables could be seen. Guesstimated where the band was and found that I could flip down a black cover on one end of the cable. Tried to pull it, gently. Mistake. Realized it wouldn't one out like computer hard drive cables, so I took out the screws holding the plate on the other end (it's only an inch long). That allowed me remove the cable. Took it out, cleared away dust, put t back and closed the black over. It worked! Put the screws back in, back on and... we are happy (although I do have four extra screws!). Just be gentle.

A bar code stripe on the right side of the copy.

i'm not sure if you're talking about a solid black band or a bunch of little stripes running down page. does it happen when you run an internal report or only on copies? if its a black solid band, check and make sure the bluish colored tab on top of the drum is all the way to the left side. if its a group of fine lines, depending on whether it happens on internal reports or not, it could be the drum is going bad or you may have a bad scanner. write back with a little more info if this suggestion doesn't work.

good luck,

Dark band on left side, Samsung HL-R5668W

the reflecting mirror is likely loose and falling down inside the light reflecting tube. you should have seen the band getting darker and larger,
the small mirror is in front of the lamp and bends the light,
remove the lamp and look down the tube (light path)
