Foul odor coming from insinkerator disposal

We are a Homebuilder and install insinkerator disposals for our new homeowners. I have had 2 complaints from Homeowners that there is a bad odor coming from, their disposals. These complaints come from owners that bought Spec Homes that were about 2 yrs old.We have made several suggestions ranging from lemon peels, bleach, vinegar and baking soda. A Homeowner said today it sorta smelled like rust. How could this be? Please email me if you have suggestions or remedies

We installed one of the more expensive Insinkerator disposals and have had the same odor issues.  We had a plumber check the drains, dishwasher hose, etc... and he said all looks well.  Not sure what else to do... :-?

I had an insinkerator Essential installed 2 years ago. It stinks all the time. I clean it and after a few uses it stinks again. I have had disposals in my homes for over 40 years and never had disposal odors, NEVER. I recently found the reason. The anti-vibration mounting ring at the top of the chamber is shaped in such a way that it is a natural food trap. Put your fingers just under/inside the steel mounting ring and curve them up toward the sink. There you will find a ridge about 3/8 inch deep that will be filled with old stinky food, gross.
I called insinkerator about the POOR DESIGN of this unit and they just didn't get it. They said I am the only person who has ever complained. They tried to troubleshoot the cause of the odor everywhere, even though I told them all about the large amount of stinky food I found trapped in the anti-vibration mounting ring. They were of no help at all. They agreed to send me a new replacement unit. I said OK, but the problem, and a new replacement unit will not fix it unless you have corrected this serious design flaw.

The only thing that should be used to clean a disposal is "Ice" anything else will / could cause several different problems. Run the water for about 10 seconds, turn the disposal on, put a few handfulls of ice down the drain, when the ice is gone, leave the water running for about 20 seconds. This both cleans the unit and sharpens the blades..

Why does our Samsung DMT300RFW dishwasher have a terrible odor coming from it ?

Usually caused by a draining problem. Check your drain hose where it goes into you garbage disposal. That drain hose should be mounted up so water from the sink and garbage disposal can't backwash into the dishwasher. Use a clamp or zip tie to mount the drain hose so it goes up at least 4 to 6 inches above the garbage disposal port.

Likely your drain hose goes into your garbage disposer and does not have a rise before it enters the disposer. You will get backwash from your disposer falling back into your dw causing the odor. Simple fix is to make sure the drain hose travels upward a couple inches as it comes out of the disposer. Thanks

Do you have it connected to an air gap? If not this can allow the water to drain back into the dishwasher and will sometimes have food particles in it making it stink.

Continuous Odor in the machine

I would check your drain line. If its connected to the disposal make sure its elevated you may be getting back flow from the disposal into the dishwasher. Hope this helps _MJ_

Our jenn-Air built in dishwasher smells foul and has since the first time we used it 4 months ago. we have tried bleach, vinegar, finish brand dishwaher cleaner, less soap, cascade soap, running every day,...

We had similar type of problem (as well as residual water always left in bottom) and after pulling out the dishwasher, found that the drainage tube was incorrectly installed by contractor. It was laying on the floor behind it with a only a slight rise to the garbage disposal inlet. I suspect this contributed to sewer odors as well a water back flowing into the dishwasher. I disconnected drainage tube so that it went up 24+" and then connected to garbage disposal (creates a loop that blocks sewer odors and back flow conditions). I also cleared out the filter at bottom of inside the dishwasher. The Use & Care Guide suggested using baking soda in China/Crystal mode for 10 minutes, opening the front door and letting it sit overnight. I repeated that for 3 nights and it did clear up the remaining odor. Don't know if this will help your issue or not. Good luck!

Sounds like your waste pipes aren,t connected properly. You need a water trap (u bend) between the dishwasher and the main waste pipe from the sink. Any decent plumber should be able to fix in less than an hour.Cheers Derek.

UNsermount sink with waste disposal

The easy mount disposal has a ring the (sort of) screws onto the insinkerator sink drain - the thing that is labeled insinkerator when you look down into the sink.

If this is a new install on a new sink, I recommend the EZ mount model. If there is already the sink drain (thing mentioned above) labeled insinkerator, you may be able to simply attach the new disposal to the existing drain ring.

Also: If you have a dishwasher to connect, this is a great time to install the "air gap valve" (available for almost free at any hardware store.)

Kenmore Ultra Wash Model 665 Dishwasher

Dishwashers which are properly installed and regularly used won't normally have a problem with bad odors. Check the following: ?Was the drain hose brought in at the top of the cabinet, or down near the floor? it must be 34" from the floor. ?Do you run the unit at least once every 2 days? -Run a cycle with a quart of vinegar to clean the tub and pump. ?Does the disposal tend to back up slightly when the dishwasher drains? Drain may be clogged. -Don't use gel detergent! ?Check your water softener(If so equipped) These can cause foul odors in the water supply if not properly balanced or maintained Good luck!
