Fan belt hitting housing when running.

When tractor is running fan belt hits housing, and makes a sound like there
is something loose. When not running you can move fan blades back and forth.

I take it this tractor has a water pump? It could be that the pump is going out or an idler pulley bearing is bad. If you can move the fan back and forth there is something loose or a bearing out causing the belt to slap the housing. Check to see if you can see any wobbling pulleys. Hope this helps. MT

Blades won't engage. I hit something, blades quit turning, check belt, its okay. When you hit button to engage blades, you hear click

When you look under the mower do you see two belts ? Top one goes to the rear axle and lower one goes to mower deck spindle.
Your description sounds like the electric clutch is engaging,so if you are seeing two belts coming off the bottom of the engine maybe the belt bounced off a idler pulley on the deck and is not tight enough.

When I engage to mow, the mower deck has a clanging sound. do I need to change the belt ?

not likely a belt thing. Sounds like a bent blade, bent housing, bent spindle shaft. Perhaps something simple like a piece of metal or a rock jammed up in the housing.

  • Turn the key off and remove it from the machine.
  • Raise the housing up high enough to look everything over. Or maybe I should say to look everything under.
  • Rotate the blades to see where one might be hitting the housing or other object.

The belt usually does not contribute to clanking noises.

I hit a metal pipe with my cub cadet zero turn lawn mower today. Now it smokes under the deck when I engage the blades and it is not cutting the grass. Have I ruined my mower?

You'll need to look under the deck w/ the mower not running and see why the blades aren't turning. Most likely something is bent (maybe blade) and hitting something. The smoke is probably from the belt slipping and getting hot.

Hi, it sounds like you have the wrong belt (if it new one) orvery worn if it is used.
Also check the spindles for damage because if you have hit anything with the blades it may crack the housings which put the pulleys out of sync.
If you have hit something or there is damage , you may have bent the deck which moves the pulley off sync too.solutions would be a new belt or spindle or even deck.
Take it to your local John Deere Dealer for further advice.

Yes, what I believe you have, is a loose drive belt. this can be due to several things,1st, the drive tensioner spring may be broken, 2nd,the drive belt tensioner pivot arm may need lube, or the belt is worn out.
You did not mention the hydro making noise(whining) if that were the case i would have you check to see if the brake were sticking.

Fan above drive belt pulley is hitting metal brace

If the fan blades aren't torn, you could try bending them back in place. I have had sucess doing that before. The plastic naturally wants to go back to where it was, with a little help. If that doesn't work, you can replace the fan, or have it replaced.
