Dark Grey Vertical Bar

A 1-1/2 inch vertical dark grey bar has shown up the full height of my display. Letters and pictures show thru it, it just enhances a 2-1/2 inch area vertically. Any clues?

1. try connecting laptop to an external monitor and check if this vertical dark gray bar appears. if yes it means video is the problem. you need to boot in safe mode then uninstall the video driver. boot to notmal mode then download and install the latest video driver. if still same problem then replace video card. if video is built in with motherboard you need to replace motherboard.

2. when the vertical dark gray bar did not appear in the external monitor then it means issue is with the LCD panel. Do this turn off laptop. press and hold D key then press Power button at the same time or Press and hold on the Fn key then Power button check if the test will run. Color displays full screen when you keep pressing on N key when the colors appears check the vertical dark gray bar if still exist in the test, this means LCD panel and LCD cable needs to be replaced.

If you unplug the set and let it sit till it dries out you may be able to save it, but turn it off and unplug it before it burns up. There are several boards and chips that can be damaged from the liquid. Most likely it is more than one that has been damages but if it dries out with out shorting out it may be saved. If your lucky,

Vertical Bar on JVC VM42WV74

A vertical bar can be caused by a number of things. A couple of possibilities:
1) Bad connection to panel at that vertical location.
2) Defective processing chip.
3) Bad panel

Any of the above could be the problem. Some experimentation and measurement would be necessary to determine the exact cause.
