Question about Technics Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Hi, I have recently purchased a pair of technics 1200 mk2 turntables. One works fine but the other skips, even though I have tried adjusting the height of the arm and adjusting balance etc, no combination seems to work!! I have tried a different needle but it still skips. I have bought these second hand is it possibly a problem with the arm?

There may be a weight missing on the arm , look at the other one to see the parts on that arm and make sure they are exactly the same nothing missing , otherwise there may be something wrong with the armitures guide
try tape on a penny then put it on top of the arm and see if it still skips

What type of turntable do you have? Some turntables must be grounded to the ground screw on the receiver. It may be the selector that needs to be cleaned. Use tuner spay cleaner (if you can still find some around) , also clean the RCA inputs. . If that does not work.. you may have to replace the receiver. The cost to repair is not worth it .

Need a needle for a TECHNIC SL-3350

It's 'TechnicS' and 'stylus'. Wouldn't a web search have been faster?

"TECHNIC SL-3350 stylus"

But even 'technic" and 'needle' would have worked.

I'm no expert, but based on the general idea of operation for a turntable, it sounds like the arm is getting bound up or being hindered in some way. If you pick the arm up and swing it back and forth manually, can you feel a place in the movement that seems to have some degree of resistance? You would want to move the arm very slowly and feel for even the slightest amount of resistance. It doesn't take much force to hold the arm from advancing. An ill positioned wire in the base of the arm could be the culprit or if the unit has an automated return home mechanism, there could be a problem there as well. Maybe working the arm back and forth manually several times to its fullest allowable extension, will help to eliminate the impediment. Do this caringly and without excessive force. I hope this helps.

Technics turntable plays but no sound with Sherwood receiver

The problem is the fact that the new receiver has no phono input. The phono input has an extra stage of amplification built in. Your receiver is working fine. You need to purchase a phono pre-amp. These run around $20. Connect the turntable to the preamp and the presmp output to any line level input on your new receiver and everything will work as expected.

Turntable signal problems are difficult to locate because of the extremely low signal levels. Are you sure that you have the output of the turntable connected to a Phono input? If connected to a standard AUX or Tape input, you won't hear anything. Check for signal by turning on the unit and touching lightly the needle. You should hear a scratching sound. If not, start with a new needle.

Technics 1200 turntable - no power Musical Fidelity AMP - no power

Technics 1200 - if the mains cord connectors and fuses are ok - it could be the power switch - when you rotate the switch do any lights come on? If it is just no rotation of the turntable platter then it could be the motor controller IC.

There is an internal regulator - often the associated zener and transistor fail.

Please rate this as a genuine cure - I know these inside out and with a bit more information I can give you a solution.
