Go to "Device Manager" and look if any yellow or red alerts are being displayed next to any devices. To access the "Device Manager" go to the 'Control Panel", "Administrative Tools", "Computer Management" and select "Device Manager" located in the left side column.
If there is an alert, double click on that device to determine the problem, i.e.… device not configured, cannot start this device, etc…
It sounds like all your software drivers got blown away or can’t load. If that’s the case, try running diagnostics. Press and hold the <Fn> key while powering the system on. This will initiate a diagnostic routine to check your hardware.

The key is next to the key on the lower left hand side of the keyboard. If all the diagnostics pass, you will have to load the software drivers for each device that has a yellow (?) next to it. You need to go to www.support.dell.com and select "I'm looking for drivers and downloads". If you don't have the proper version of Adobe you will be prompted to install it. Once installed return to "drivers and downloads" and enter the "service tag", (serial number) of the 710m laptop. Dell keeps a listing of drivers for every customer's computer they sell.

The common advice is to go to cyberlink, pay and then download windvd, however there is a better option.
Download VLC which is a tremendous video player (plays every video format) that will play DVDs. It's free too :-)

Inspiron 1525 PC Notebook: can i use Dell Inspiron 1525 to burn dvds? How to ...

Hi Richard, yes you can burn DVDs with your laptop. Check the CD/DVD disc that came with your computer. However, I understand its pre-installed either with Roxio or Sonic utilities. On the other hand, if you have Vista and Windows 7 it will do as well.

Please comment if the information provided has been helpful for the improvement of my support assistance. Thank you and regards.

Want to connect an external keyboard to my Inspiron 710m

Yeah with new branded keyboards, such problems are occuring. This is because Windows XP can't detect the default software for these new-age hardware like USB-keyboard & mouse.

So for this problem you have two solutions, either download drivers for your keyboard from respective manufacturer's websites or simply upgrade your OS from XP to Vista or Windows 7.

Cannot play dvds as drivers lost when changing from vista to xp home.when enter dvd it says dvd decoder and drives lost

If you are running XP, you will need to install a DVD playback application. IN VIsta, DVD playback is native to WIndows, in XP, Dell used a program called Cyberlink PowerDVD. You can either buy PowerDVD on line or download a free DVD playback application from places like Download.com. I've had good luck with the AVS DVD player here:

http://www.download.com/AVS-DVD-Player/3000-7970_4-10491860.html?cdlPid=10669161

If you just installed XP on this system, it is also important that all the drivers are installed and in the correct order. Dell's preferred order is:

Notebook System Software
Chipset Utility
Video Driver
Sound Driver
Modem Driver
Network Driver
Wireless Driver
Touchpad Driver
Quickset Utility

Drivers are available here:
