Question about Tamarack ArtiScan 2400FS Film Scanner

2 Answers

Quality degradation I have had the 2400FS for about 8 yrs and have used it with great original results. Over the years, the image quality on film scans has suffered. It looks like some internal glass window needs cleaning. The image has developed dirty (noise?) along the left side of the film looking at the front. Does anyone have a parts drawing of the internals or a service manual? I need to disassemble it to clean the offending surface. TIA

Read your comment on the Tamarack ArtiScan 2400FS Film Scanner. I purchase one without an ac power cord. Can you tell me the amperage/voltage/model number data off the power cord? Does it have a DC in voltage rating? I am going to try to get a comparable one at Radio Shack. Thanks!

Although I have never done it, I believe that you can run some older hardware as though it was a Windows XP machine. something like Compatibility Mode or Virtual machine.

Teflon as gear material...?

Basically teflon is what is known as an ultra high wear molecular material, meaning it absorbs impact and is slightly spongy so when there is pressure it reverts back to it's normal shape and does not wear rapidly. Using teflon with steel, basically the steel absorbs into the metal teflon molecules over time that create a slippery surface for both preventing wear, slick50 oil additive is a good example.
Using a soft material with a hard material such as chain will result in the chain eventually wearing out. A good example is a rubber hose rubbing on a piece of steel, the hose is unaffected and the steel turns shiny and wears into a groove first.

Try carefully taking the scanner apart and cleaning it out. A buildup of dust, even a thin layer can greatly reduce the quality of your scans.

Scanned image appears with lines going through it

it is possible, but first try cleaning the glass with a window cleaner and a soft cotton cloth and under the scanning options increase the quality to a higher setting and see if this helps at all. You may even benefit from purchasing a new scanner if this does not work as they a fairly resonably priced and will save you the hassle of repairing it.

Huge difference in film scanning quality

For ARCHIVAL quality scans, there is no comparison. The Nikon wins hands-down. For making small prints and web sharing, either will work fine.

Misalignment of scann after area selected

the 4990 often failed to detect automatically the film. Go manual, take the film zone, don't forget to specify it in the driver (the focus depends on it), and crop manually the picture. The result is perfect because it's yours. In many times, if the result is important to you, forget the automatisms.

Scanning for video

After the first scan through select the zoom in functionality to just scan the area you want to zoom in. That way the scanned image will be much bigger and better quality.
