Hi, its a Packard Bell, Store and Save USB external hard drive

  • liamjorge Oct 31, 2008

The external hard drive does not show up on my PC, the LED on the side of the hard drive (packard bell, store & save unit) constantly flashes between red and green?? Have re-booted PC and tried powering down / up hard drive with no success

  • liamjorge Oct 31, 2008

Thanks, thought about trying it on a different computer but the LED performs same function when USB disconnected so thought it must be unit itself but will give it a go

Try unplugging pc power cord for five minutes.

If problem persists test the unit on a different computer.

If the unit is faulty, the hard drive can still be fine.

Take apart the hard disk enclosure and see if the hard disk cable is disconnected.

If the caddy is defective, buy a new hard drive caddy enclosure at any computer shop and mount the hard disk in the new caddy.

SO you have problem in with your external hard drive that is no longer recognize by your computer, first thing to try here is to connect the drive to a different USB port or better try it to another computer and check if it will be recognize if not the next step here is to try a different usb cable then if still not a new hard drive enclosure will be an option,,,,,

That would indicate a hardware problem with the external drive, I suggest you contact packard bell if you have warranty on the drive to get it repaired.

    few things you can try

    -Try another computer

    -Try another usb port

if this external harddrive has a power adapter, which plugs into the wall, its possible that the adapter is failing and not giving the hard drive enough power, that has happened to me a few times. To fix that problem you would need to replace the power adapter.

I don't know what kind of drive you got there, the model number or anything else you can find on the harddrive would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Ekse

Hello
Not to much information from you . Here is a E-Machine assembly for the motherboard .
The power switch is a 2-wire connection to the Motherboard. The 2 pins on the motherboard it connects to will be labeled something like PW. The polarity on it doesn't matter. There will also be a power LED connection. Usually those wires are green and black. Green is positive. There's also a hard drive activity LED with (usually) red and black wires. Red is positive. Hopefully that polarity will be marked on the motherboard. If not, try it one way and if the LED doesn't light up, try it the other way. The power (green) LED should be on whenever the PC is on. The hard drive (red) LED will be on whenever the drive is being accessed. There might be pins on the motherboard for reset. Some computers don't have a reset button. In that case you wouldn't connect anything to it. If your case does have a reset button then connect the wires to the reset pins on the motherboard. Polarity doesn't matter for that.

Hope this helps

Tip

Speed up vista !!1

  1. 1. Shut Down Remote Differential Compression
  2. Remote Differential Compression checks the changes of your files over a network to move them with as little bandwidth as possible instead of transferring an entire file that has previously been moved. With in constantly checking for file changes, this service will greatly slow system performance.
    To shut down this service:
  3. Control Panel
  • Change to Classic View
  • Choose Program Features
  • Select Turn Windows Features On And Off
  • Uncheck Remote Differential Compression

    1. 2. Shut Down Windows Search Indexing
    2. Windows Vista search indexing is constantly checking the files on your system to make their information available for quick searching. This is helpful, but can severely slow system performance.
      To shut down constant indexing:
    3. Select Start then Computer
    • Right Click your C: Drive
    • General Tab, Uncheck Index this drive for faster searching
    • On the next dialog box, Choose Include subfolders and files

    1. 3. Add at least a 2GB USB Flash drive to take advantage of Windows Ready Boost
    2. Ready Boost uses a USB flash drive to provide quick access memory for the operating system. The Ready Boost system can greatly improve system speed.
      To set it up:
    3. Plug in a Ready Boost Compatible USB Flash Drive
    • Select Start then Computer
    • Right Click Your USB Drive in My Computer
    • Choose the Ready Boost Tab
    • Click Use this device
    • Choose as much space as you can free up for RAM usage vs. Storage

Hii, wel i got a system which is pentium3 in these system there are few files in the hard drive & i want to back up those files due to some reason i could not back up my files because my computer does...

The solution is simple: If you can access the internet with your Pentium 3
system, create an archive file (.zip or .rar) of the files you want to save/backup.
Upload it to Megaupload or Rapidshare. Download it from any other computer.

My Dell desktop computer will not boot and it is too old to spend money on repairs. However, I would like to be able to get the files off my hard drive. If I buy a kit and turn the internal hard drive...

Nope. you cannot access your files. even if you use a external hard dive to access the files.

i suggest you install windows 7 in your computer but do not reformat the hard disk . in that way your files will still be saved in your harddrive.
Once you have access to your files i suggest you save them in a flash drive or external hard drive if you have one. then reformat your computer and install a windows xp.

here is a tutorial on how to install windows 7 without reformatting your harddrive.

Goodluck. If you have any success using my solution please give me updates.. Thanks

Key board is locked welcome screen is on but am unable to enter password cant shut down computer due to important files any idea how to fix this without powering down computer Keyboard Dell RT7D20

Try unplugging and replugging keyboard. If that doesn't work, save your files to a flash drive or external hard drive, then go to:
    1. Start
    2. Control Panal
    3. System and Security
    4. System - Device Manager
When the Device Manager comes up, look for "Keyboards" Click on the little arrow to the left of it. If there is a problem, you will see red or yellow markings.
Right click on the keyboard listed and reset it.

With myflash drives when i try to save files that I have typed useing word 2007 on my computer it tells me that word dosen't have permission to save this file but it will save on my mom computer

it may not be a problem with your flash drive but possibly a problem with the privileges of your account on that particular computer. Be sure that the computer you are having problems saving from you are logged in as a full administrator not just a power user or a user. second check on the sharing settings on the flash drive, typically these should not be set but there might have been something mistakenly set disallowing you access to save to it.

secondly, is there any software that is built in to the flash drive? some flash drives when you first use them they already have some files and programs that will pop up as you use it and some of them are lock down software that may be also denying you writing privileges.

System does not power on and the LEDs on the front of the computer are not flashing.

    3.Replace the system board.
