SOURCE: Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected
I have a Western digital model wd2500b007-rnn
and I cannot get either my PC or my laptop to recognize the drive. I isolated the drive to another computer with the same error. It says USB device not reognized. I also tried a different port. I have not tried different cables. Can I retrieve the old data on the drive?
Did you find a resolution for this? I am having the same problem. None of my PCs can recognize the drive. Formatting seems to be the only choice but I need to recover my old data first.

press the "Start" and "R" keys at the same time.
type "compmgmt.msc" in the box and select OK.
On the left pane, select "Disk Management"
on the screen, look for the drive that does not have a letter.
Right click the bar (on the bottom part of the screen) of your drive and select "Change Drive letter and paths...".
Click add and select the "assign the following...".
on the drop down menu, select any letter you like EXCEPT A or B.
click OK.
Your drive should now show up in My Computer. All of your Data should still be there also.

A few basics.. are you sure you've hooked it up right? meaning usb cable plugged into both the laptop and the hard drive? Does that particular model hardrive require a power pack to operate? If so, is that plugged in and operational? Assuming that is all OK.. does your system recognise that new hardware has been added when you turn it ( the hard drive on) and it is plugged in? It should but if not.. you may have to use the control panel and choose the ADD NEW HARDWARE feature.. At some point during all this. your system shoud acknowledge that new hardware has been recognized and it should ask for a cd with drivers on it to be installed or it may already have drivers that are compatible with it and self load.. If you fail to get any kind of new hardware acknowledgement, you may have a bad USB cable, a bad USB port or your new hard drive is not operating correctly.. I'll check back periodiaclly to see if any of these suggestions got you going or if you need any more help.. Good luck
