Question about Samsung HLN5065W 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Noise from Samsung rear projection DLP HD TV.

Hi,
My 2 year old Samsung rear projection DLP tv 1080p HD has been giving me problems lately. When you turn on the TV, a noise like a motor running comes on. Now it makes the picture flicker a little(just one time). The noise has gotten louder. I tried to unplug the wall connection for about an hour. but it did not do much good. There are times during programming that the TV wont make the noise. Please help.
Thanks,
Amar.

This noise is an indication of a bad color wheel. aa dlp uses a mechanical motor to spin a coloered segment disk. this turn the white light of the lamp into your colors of pictures. Now anything that moves will eventally break. the flickering is also an indication of a color wheel going bad. eventally this will cause the set to shut down. Color wheels can be replaced. i dont know your model so i am not sure of the exact replacement procedure. at my shop we charge average 250 for such a repair

Hi, you have one of two problems, either the color wheel is going or one of the cooling fans are going, the color wheels are a very common problem in samsung dlp`s, sorry I can`t nail it to a specific part but I`d bet it`s the color wheel as they are notorious for failing in samsungs, video-tek

TV shuts off every few minutes

The problem lies not with the manufacturer but with the technology. While DLP is one of the clearer, crisper rear projection technologies, it is still rear projection, and therefore the most unreliable of the TV technologies, LCDs being the most reliable and the least expensive to fix (relatively speaking). Projection TVs require that the lamp be changed every 2 years (with about 6 hours a day of use) but this can be as often as 6 months to a year for households that use the TV all day long. Lamps cost 150 to 200 dollars in most cases. Beside the lamp, the other parts in the TV can go as you have learned and they are not cheap to repair. I would recommend an LCD tv as they usually manifest problems in the first year (under warranty) if they are going to have any at all. No man-made technology is 100 percent, but I have to say that Samsung is an excellent brand, very high quality, and more features than the competitors. I own one myself (LCD) and have had it for over a year with not a single problem and it gets heavy use as I use it for HD cable, PC monitor, blu-ray, and Xbox 360.

To wrap things up, let me just say that were this problem to be fixed, being a projection TV you might run into these issues in another couple of years again. I would cut my losses and try an LCD (current generation plasmas are also good but they are super expensive to fix if they do break).

Hi..if your lamp is on but no picture, then your lamp is good. Your problem is the DMD board (digital mirror display board) is bad. This is very common with Samsung DLP.
