Western Digital MY BOOK 500gig - Drive does not appear

My m8 has just got me this drive. he loaded it up with stuff on his pc but now when i plug it inot my lap top the drive does not appear in my computer. Dispite it installing itself and saying "your hardware is installed and ready to use" It also seems to show up in the device manager as USB mass storage device and appears to be working properly. However still does not appear in my computer. Ive tried various usb ports, rebooting, etc> Help would be appreciated. Thanks Dino It worked before, then disappeared during a transfer of file form another of my drive. Now it dings too, but is not visible in Disk Management neither it appears in my list of drives in File Explorer. BUT I can see it in the "Safely Remove Hardware" and stop it. I have the same problem on 2 different machines (DELL Optiplex 745 and Toshiba Satellite M40) Please help as I bought that drive because I had another problem with another of my MyBook Essential drive. My drive is a My Book Office 1T.I have logged a call on the WD support.

The naming wouldn't affect the drives appearing. Sometimes, the drive letters can become a problem (from experience). This happens when both drives try to occupy the same letter. Open disk management and check to see if both drives are visible at the top. If so, manually, right click on one of them and select "change drive letter and path". Select something, you know isn't normally occupied.

Computer won't detect new HDD as master when booting

You can do this!

1. Connect your 500gig drive as the slave of your smaller boot drive.
2. Go to http://freewareapp.com/western-digital-data-lifeguard-tools_download/ and get the Western Digital Lifeguard tools.
3. Run the executable to install WD tools.
4. Run that application.

You'll notice there is a Drive to Drive Copy utility. This will clone your new 500gig drive from the smaller drive. When the utility finishes copying the drive, shut down. Remove the smaller drive, and set your 500 gig drive as master/single. Reboot, and you should be running off the new drive.

It is possible that your old drive was an IDE drive and your new one is SATA. If so, you may need to enter Setup on the reboot, go to the Boot menu, and set the boot device to the new drive type.

Check the driver letter assignement, and make sure there is no conflict on that (happened to me on my laptop as well).
I found out by reading this: www.devicedriverfinder.com/blog/device-errors/external-hard-drive-troubleshooting

Definitely don't format if not required, you can first try to restore the MBR.

Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.

Western Digital 500gig External Harddrive. Power up troubles.

this is a bit tricky , you'll need to tell my what operating system you have ,

more than likely sounds like windows power management is turning the drive off

check your power management settings.

if thats not the case just let me know.

Western Digital 500gig external drive

it sounds like hard drive data may be corrupted. This could be due to a number of things. A power failure, hardware failure etc.. If the drive will not even let you access it you'll probably have to just format it im afraid.

Error code -1309

Try to copy the file to another part within the drive it's in, this is a READ error. once it's there, move it to the WD drive.

Good luck!

If it is showing up in your device manager - is it also showing up in the disk manager? If it is you can check if it has a letter name attached or if you need to give it one.
