Question about Meade 8" LX90 LNT Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope with SmartFinder w/ FREE UPS

1 Answer

Meade LX90 8" SCT I am having trouble getting a firm fixing of the scope to the tripod. I may have cross threaded the fixing. I notice that the fixing at the bottom of the yolk is secured by several Allen screws. Can these be safely removed to take off the base unit or will it disturb other parts?

You may need to add one or two small washers to the central screw to tighten things up a bit. A "C" clip holds the big screw on the tripod. If you break it any hardware store can supply a replacement for less than $1.00.

The Meade 8" SCT LX90 is a very good all round unit. Although angry, you will find it is well worthwhile persevering.
The back plate, called the optical back, takes an eyepiece holder into which you can also fit your diagonal prism for comfortable viewing. It is part 3 in the diagram here, Fig 1
http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/LXseries/LX90-LNT.pdf

All you need is the right size holder for this scope, such as
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/202598-REG/Meade_07182_Eyepiece_Holder_aka_Visual.html

Any telescope shop can sell you one, but take care to get one that also fits the barrel of your prism, which will be either 1.25" or 2"

I have a meade 6600 and want to know what it's worth.

That is difficult. It depends on where you are. The scope is an old but good quality model and sold in the mid 80s for about $700. Nowadays there is a lot of competition in that type of scope, 6" Newt, about $450 new with tripod and warranty. I think it would be worth now about $150 with tripod in good condition.

Depends on what you broke? The tripod head? is the scope tube dented badly-- any glass broken? You might be able to buy a new MOUNT for the scope from Meade-- call them here:

Both plastic gears for the slow motion control are broken on my Meade NGC tripod. Cannot find replacement parts.

ONLY Meade would have parts. You can call them and see if they will sell the parts and or a new tripod.

However you need to know that this is a "deal" scope sold by Meade in discount stores. It has a lot of PLASTIC everywhere and might be suitable for a child but is not very durable. Next time buy a 6 inch Dobsonian telescope for one that will last you for many many years of good service. Here is a picture of the DOB telescope, which is our #1 recommendation to beginners in the Astronomy hobby-

Runaway DECLINATION is what this is called. Usually it can be fixed with a new hand controller cable. If a new cable does not fix it, then it has a blown motor circuit board and must be returned to Meade for repairs.

Meade LX200GPS The scope does not complete the 'Auto Alignment'

Once the scope has taken a GPS fix and knows TIME, and SITE, and you do a two star alignment your alignment stars overide any automatic alignment issues.

You could turn off the GPS put in Time, Date, and Site, do a two star alignment and everything would be fine. Centering the alignment stars is the "trick". Apparently the scope also finds NORTH OK, or the alignment stars would be way off. Since you pre-level the tripod already the software can FAIL on "tilt" and you still get good gotos.

I would not worry about it, especially since your gotos seem perfectly fine.

Meade "might" sell you the replacement part. But most likely they will want you to return the scope for repairs.

How do you mount an ext 90 telescope (meade) to its tripod (ext field tripod). both are unused out of the box

There are two holes in the base of the telescope that match up with the two thumb screws on the tripod. It's easier if you lift up the base of the tripod a little using the latitude scale shaft.

Read the manual front to back before you use the scope.

Problem with alignment of Meade LX90 8" telescope

Start from scratch-

RESET the hand controller.

Calibrate motors using the same power source you will use outside.

Re-train the drives

Calibrate sensors on Polaris

Use either the 110 volt power cord, or buy a 12 volt power pack and the proper Meade 12 volt cable. (www.scopestuff.com carries the right 12 volt cable)

If your scope is NOT the LNT or GPS model you must level the tripod before you align. Go to home depot and buy the $3 small plastic two way bubble level, or the bulls-eye style bubble level.

Further trouble, I suggest going to the LX90 Yahoo group forum, and asking questions there.

Good Luck
