You have half a dozen reasons why this will not work. The Operating system (XP) does not recognise the different hardware, the Bios doesn't recognise the MBR (the file structure of the harddrive) and you have all the wrong hardware drivers installed.
There is a way to do this if you have the original XP installation disk, install the harddrive, put the XP installation disk in the CD/DVD drive and set the machine to boot from the CD/DVD first. When the machine boots up and goes to install XP follow the instructions as if you are doing a fresh install, when SetUp attempts to format the harddrive it will discover you already have a version of XP installed and will give you the option to repair it, go ahead with the repair and MAYBE SetUp will be able to see and install the correct hardware drivers. If not you are looking at Slaving the harddrive, saving your personal files and then formatting the harddrive and reinstalling XP fresh.

New HDD Problem. What I see is strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility. How do I solve this problem?. What I have is 160Gb hard disk

Re: Dell Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for Setup utility error Thanks for the reply Craig. Yes the hard drive was removed for a new one and the EIDE cables were changed 3 times to make sure that I didnt have any defective ones. The jumper settings were left on cable select (old hard drive AND new).

UPDATE!!!

I hate problems I can't solve so I used my other computer that I KNOW works. I installed the NEW hard drive in my other computer and installed Windows XP Professional just to see if I purchased a bad hard drive. It detected it, formated it, and I test installed it. Less than an hour later, Windows XP was running on it NO PROBLEM. I removed the hard drive and installed it BACK IN THE PROBLEM COMPUTER. Still got the error message but I did the Alt-Tab-F to let it detect the IDE Configuration again. I also went into the BIOS settings and configured it in there as well.

WOO HOO! It detected it and it went to the Windows XP slash screen. Then I got the Blue Screen of Death and I was NEVER SO HAPPY TO SEE IT!!!!! That meant that the drive was finally friggin being recognized by the system BIOS/Motherboard. If any of you didn't know, you typically get a BSoD if you don't do a reapir install of XP or a clean install if you have a hard drive that had a prior install from another computer.

I then started putting back the components one by one (2nd stick of RAM, CD Drive, Floppy Drive, PCI Cards, etc.) and configured the BIOS for each of it. IT ultimately ended up working and I got to the XP Desktop.

FYI: I honestly think that the BIOS "Hard Locked" and was stuck in that crazy loop. It probably happened when the first drive died while it was trying to boot. I took a chance and tried to get a fully formatted hard disk into it to break the cycle and luckily it worked!

If any of you techs ever get into this situation, try the procedures that I did and it may help you.

I just installed a hard drive that I know works from a different computer, this machine is a presario sr1720nx. I get to the compaq screen and it reboots after getting to the recovery screen, I have tried...

Hi there,

If your HDD is being detected it is good. You did the right thing. There is a possibility that it could be the power supply. It is not providing enough power so the system reboots. If you have 2 HDD's connected try removing one of them. If your pc is connected to a power strip or a surge protector, try connecting it directly to the wall outlet.

Error loading operating system

You will need to perform a repair install using a Windows CD. The current configuration on the hard drive was basically with an entirely different computer and thus, it does not know how to "talk" to the new hardware. The repair install should fix that and create a new Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) that will enable Windows to "talk" to the new hardware.

Can I install the hard drive from one computer to another?

you open gateway and remove hard drive, then you open the compaq and remove that HDD then you install HDD from gateway power on and you should be good, you may have to reinstall some drivers but unlikely if all your periphs. are the same, the HDD is going to attached to a ribbon cable and will usually be under all other drives in machine

If your old copy of win xp is not being used by any other computer then reformat the entire drive with xp. Also make sure that your drive is not divided into 2 or 3 sections. All updated will be available on the windows update site. The reason that I prefer tostart from scratch is Everything is new with no lingering Junk programs in the background.
