Question about E-Machines emachines (emachinees) CD-ROM Drive

CD-Rom Drive tray came off

The drive was open and my 4 year old bumped into it and the thing popped right off. I don't want to jam it in there, but it won't just slide in either. Can I fix it?

cd rom tray came completely out of the drive

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2009

I, too, banged the open CD tray and it came completely out. So now that I know "it's toast", what can I do? Is it worth taking it in to repair (approx total $90 parts/labor) or buying an external drive (on sale for about the same). Computer is 8yrs old and still works perfect. knock on wood. These are Hawaii prices, which I are usually higher than continental U.S.

If the tray came out of the drive, it's toast. If the face plate came off the tray, it usually slides back on from the top down. If the face plate came off the drive itself, it should pop back on if you line up the tabs properly.

Cd jammed in a dell pp31l

There are two ways toopen the CD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work.
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject.
If this does not work then you can manually open the CD drive tray by -
Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drivetray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive traypops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CDdisc.
If you continue having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD driveis faulty and needs replacing.

Cd drive will not open

if the drive is just stuck then

Look at the front of your CD drive you should see a small hole like this:

avatar23454_4.jpg

straighten a paperclip and insert the end in to the hole it will open the cd drive up

If this is a reoccurring problem the drive motor might be going bad or it is sticks frequently then there is somthing protruding or something knocking the cd out of alignment and jamming the drive closed.

make sure that the cd-rom is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the cd-rom including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Acer CD is not getting ejeccted

The mechanism is physicall jammed.
Take a Norwegian paper-clip, and straighten one end.
Push that end into the small hole in the faceplate of the CD-drive.
Push until you feel resistance, and then push another 1/4 inch (10 mm).
The door should "unlock" -- gently pull the tray the rest of the way open, and remove any disk.
Then, it's time to spend $40, to buy a new CD/DVD reader/writer.]

The CD ROM Drive is not ejecting properly

hi,
Locking device / software installed
First, verify no locking software is being loaded, which would allow the CD-ROM tray not to open. If you are unable to determine this, reboot the computer and as it is booting up, attempt to eject the tray. No power to computer or CD-ROM drive
If you have recently installed a new CD-ROM drive or you have moved the computer, it is possible that the power to the CD-ROM may have become loose or disconnected. Check the cable connections. Bad eject button
If you are running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows XP, open My computer, right-click on the CD-ROM drive and choose the option to eject. If this ejects your CD-ROM drive tray, it is likely that the button on the CD-ROM drive has become defective and it is recommended that the drive be replaced. CD stuck within drive
It is possible that a CD may have become stuck within the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM drive has a small hole (that is not the head phone jack), using a paper clip, place the paper clip within the hole and attempt to manually eject the CD-ROM tray. If the CD-ROM drive is only partially able to be opened, attempt to pull the tray gently to see if it can be manually ejected. If it cannot be opened any further, it is likely that the gears within the CD-ROM drive have become bad, dislodged, or that a CD is positioned in the drive, which does not allow it to open. Incompatibility with IDE / ATAPI interface
If you have an IBM compatible computer and recently installed the CD-ROM drive and are unable to open the drive, attempt to temporarily disconnect the IDE cable to verify that you not experiencing an issue with an incompatibility between the CD-ROM and motherboard. Once the IDE cable has been disconnected, power on the computer and see if the CD-ROM drive tray is now able to be opened. If the drive is able to be opened with the IDE / ATAPI cable disconnected, it is recommended you use the interface card supplied with the CD-ROM drive or the ATAPI interface on the sound card / motherboard. Bad drive
Unfortunately, if after following the above recommendations you are still unable to properly open the CD-ROM drive using the button on the front of the CD-ROM drive, it is likely defective and should be replaced. Caution: If you are able to open the CD-ROM drive using a paper clip. We do not recommend that you continue using the CD-ROM drive by manually ejecting the CD-ROM using a paper clip. The drive should be replaced and this is not meant to be used as a temporary solution. Additional information and tips for buying a new CD-ROM drive can be found on our CD-ROM buying tips section.

SGI O2 CD-ROM drive tray repeatedly opens

I am having the same problem. I haven't resolved it entirely, but at least I managed to get it working again by the following steps.

First, disassemble the part of the computer chassis around the CD-ROM drive. Follow the instructions for "replacing the CD-ROM drive" in the SGI 02 hardware maintenance manual. It can be done in 10 minutes with a screwdriver.

After you have gained access to the CD-ROM drive itself, take off the top metal cover. Then you will be able to see the tray and the white gears underneath.

In my case, the problem seems to be caused by some misalignment between some wire springs and the white gears. Note when the CD tray closes, the manual eject button (a black plastic rod on the right) should stick out, and the white piece of plastic with a triangular end on the left should push against the front of the CD tray.

Somehow, the gears failed to push the white plastic piece all the way to the edge of the tray, and the CD-ROM drive thinks the tray wasn't fully-closed, and ejects the disc.

To force the drive to read the disc, pull the white plastic piece on the left with the triangular end towards the edge of the tray. (Pull it towards you if you are facing the front of the drive.) You might need to use some force, but I can get the drive to work this way, even though it still "sticks open" half the time.

Good luck, and if you happen to find a better solution, I look forward to hearing it.

CD ROM is jammed-wont open

This has happened to me. Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I'll place a CD or DVD in the tray and start to close it without making sure that the disk is seated flat in the tray. If it's ****-eyed the CD wil shatter when the tray is closed. The only way to remove the pieces inside the CD drive is to take apart the CD drive. Might be easier just to replace the unit. They run from about $25.00 to $75.00. One other note: You can try to open the tray manually by inserting the end of a paper clip into a small hole on the front bezel of the drive.

My cd/dvd opens then closes

> I've already replaced it once

Well, I've seen CD-drives that would re-open, when you try to close them -- it is _falsely_ detecting a "jam" as the tray is closing, and then just re-opens the tray, rather than "forcing" itself to close.

Replacing the CD-drive is the only way to fix that type of "false-positive" jam-detection conditions.

But, since you've done that, either you were unlucky-enough that the replacement drive was also "defective", or, you have a computer-virus on your computer that is maliciously issuing commands to the CD to "open-the-tray".
