Question about E.Digital Sony DCR-TRV265E camcorder Pal
My camera plays videos through the LCD screen but will not show any images or record any images through the LCD screen or eye piece?
Brace yourself for bad news.
The same thing happened to me about a month ago. The chip (called a ccd, I think) in your camcorder that processes the images received through the lens is broken. These chips were used in a variety of cameras and camcorders by various manufacturers although Sony never issued a product recall when the problem came to light. What Sony did offer was a free repair to anyone suffering from this problem - valid until October 2007!
There is more information available on Sony's website and the various forums out there. There is also talk that knocking or tapping the case can provide a temporary solution. Whether you choose to risk it or not is up to you but as we generally use camcorders for one-off events such as weddings, birthdays etc, it's hardly a solution in my opinion. My advice is to download to your PC any unarchived material as soon as you can and save up for a modern DVD format recorder. They have dropped in price recently and would cost pretty much the same as having your Handycam repaired privately.
I am in the process of doing this myself but as playback is not effected by the broken chip I don't anticipate any problems with downloading to my PC. Unfortunately, Picture Package is not compatible with Windows Vista, although I haven't found a solution to that one yet!
