After talking to Porter Cable there is a tool to put the belt on or you can take it to a service center to have it put on. Tool cost is $213.00 . Best advice is buy something else.

The polisher when the switch is depressed will routinely stop then start again by itself. What could cause this to happen? Brushes look like they have alot of life left in them. No loose wires inside...

Its almost without a doubt your brushes or a broken wire inside the cable, Usually a broken wire near where it enters the machine, Some times it can be caused by a dirty switch which will need replacing, does it have an electronic speed control? if so these give a lot of trouble and not worth replacing but it sounds simple enough? Try switching it on and flexing the cable near where it enters the machine, If it works now and again its a break in the cable,Hope this helps,

How to replace the head gear

i'm going to assume your 7" is like my 9" and say that after you remove the backer pad and expose the spindle you should have access to the gearbox cover that's held in with 4 screws. if you remove those 4 screws and remove the cover you should have the bevel gear exposed.

of course the handle and guard will have to be removed to make it easier.
hold down the spindle lock when unscrewing the backer pad.
