Trying to print documents - responce reads "load manual feeder with plain paper letter"

paper drawer is completely full... no printing

I have the same problem.

The printer may be trying to draw paper from a source other than the paper tray. Many printers have a hatch or slot in the front or on the side in which one can load non-standard paper sizes and envelopes. It may be trying to print there. Try to locate this place and put a few pieces of paper in there.
