When you plug it in you should get a window that asks what you want to do.

Easiest thing is to select:

"Open folder to view files with Windows Explorer"

If you don't get a window, click Start>All Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer

On the left frame click on the + sign next to My Computer.

It will show up as a Removable Disk, or on some as a brand name. Click on it.

(Now we can restart our computer and see how it looks and works)

Depending on the options your motherboard, it is necessary when starting

Thus you will appear a menu where you choose your USB flash drive.

How do you backup files by using a flashdrive

To do so manually you just plug in the flash drive to your computer and open it up (usually a little window will pop up so you can view what's in it. Then you locate the files on your computer that you want saved and highlight them->right-click COPY->Go to your flash drive folder->right-click PASTE.

There are other ways to automatically do it which involve software or a knowledge in writing, what's called a batch script, to do it. Otherwise manually copying it may work best.

Have photos and software on my i.t.flashdrive but now my laptop wont even find the flashdrive! is there any software i need to download?

No soft needed, it's a simple USB stick , the default driver is used for all. Try the stick in another pc, if it's the same then the memory chip inside it has failed and all the data on it is lost for good - junk it.

8 gb flashdrive by gigabank has malfunctioned. Is there any way I can retreve my data from it? or, repair it?

Yes, you should make sure its plugged into the USB port. Then Open My Computer by double clicking on it.
Look for your Flash Drive and double click on it.
When it opens you can highlight what ever you want to move and right click on one of the highlighted icons and click cut.
Then go back to My Computer and click on "C" drive and go to Documents. Then open the documents and right click and paste . That will move the data.
Hope that helps. Bud

Plse can u run thru the procedure to set up my new purchase pny 4gb flashdrive??

Most flashdrives (aka pen drives or usb sticks) do not require installation. They are a storage device that you add information to. If you could post your OS (either XP, Vista, Linux or Mac OS X) we can go through the process of adding and reading information from the drive.
