Question about Samsung SyncMaster 172N 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Samsung 172N 17" LCD monitor blacks out seconds at a time with increasing frequency and eventually displays scrambled graphics until system restart.

I know this is not an isolated problem as my friend has the same monitor and it has the exact same problem. In both cases it only manifested after the monitors were about two years old. I have also noticed by internet search that other people have had the same problem with the same model monitor. I have tried latest drivers and even removed Samsung drivers so that the monitor runs on winXP drivers with the same result. Any input would be appreciated.

The problem I have is that when we connect the screen it wiorks fine then blacks out after 5-40min
It then flickers on and off iregularly and every now and then shows distortion and eventually just blacks out

I have two 172N monitors and both now show the same symptoms

We have used different VGA cables and different computers in different locations all with the same result

There is no external influence that we know

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 172n monitor and the screen stays black when I turn the power on. The power light starts flashing about 3 seconds after I turn it on. All the power cords are plugged in, the...

When the monitor starts up you should be able to see the Samsung screen logo, if not it does point to the monitor. But lets be sure! hook a spare monitor to the computer, if it is okay! the Samsung Monitor is the problem and is not cost effective to repair, cheaper to replace. Now if both screens show the same problem, this indicates the Video Graphics Card in the computer is the culprit.

When you turning on your computer and when you heard a 1 beep that means your computer is functioning, but 1 beep with no display that means you need to check you monitor or try to transfer your lcd monitor to other computer to check if your monitor is working.

My monitor flickers then goes black

It could be the capacitors on your monitor's Power Supply. Open up the lcd and check the power supply board see if you see any "BULGED UP" capacitors. If thats the case you most likely just need to replace the bad capacitors. Go to radio shack or electronics supply store buy the same capacitors with the same mF and volts. If you can't find the same ones then always go with higher voltage. Replace the bad ones with new ones following this video. Make sure you note the negative terminals on the CAPS before you remove them. The shorter side on the new CAP is always negative.

Very Dim display

If you have tried all the usual adjustments (brightness etc), then the inverter board or the backlight itself is bad.

It's pretty hard to tell which one it could be, given as they are both related (the inverter board powers the backlight)

I had that happen to a few 192N's, and it was a bad inverter board in both cases.
