Gateway laptop.. The laptop will boot and in about 20 seconds..it freezes. I tried "recovery" .. but it asks for DISK 2 to be inserted.. but it only has "1 of 1" disk. Therefore, I can't "recover"..

Yes.. I used Safe Mode.. to delete any and all

    pictures and music files.

Even tried to "recover" while in safe mode..

I should also mention that there was a window that

    popped after booting called "QTTASK.EXE"

I have since found out that this is a virus..

(that's the result of a google search)..

I went in and deleted QUICK TIME..

the window disappeared.. but the problem of freezing

    still exists..

Any ideas on what to do from here?

Thanks for any and all advice!

  • VisorVik Nov 01, 2008

No printer connected to the laptop with the problems..

  • VisorVik Nov 02, 2008

    That worked! computer is working..

I have one more question, however!

I suppose that when I tried the system "recovery".. (more than once..since it didn't work the first time or two)

I filled up DRIVE D.. (recovery drive on this Gateway)

I get a warning that there is low disk space in this drive..

what do I do? do I delete some files??

    if so, which ones??

    or just leave it alone??

For the time being, the computer is working fine..

    THANK YOU!

  • VisorVik Nov 02, 2008

    One other comment..

    I couldn't download the SUPERANTISPYWARE..

it says that "system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation "

but, I guess it doesn't matter as long as it's working???

  • VisorVik Nov 04, 2008

    it's a home computer..

  • VisorVik Nov 04, 2008

Yes.. that's right. So, there must be a block that I put on there and don't even realize it..

    ???

Do u have a usb printer connected?

  • 1 more comment
  • Anonymous Nov 02, 2008

of u have a high speed connection go in to the safe mode with networking and go to www.gur.in and download three softwares and run them in the same sequence they are located on the download section and they are free

    1) malaware bytes

    2) dial a fix

    3) superantispyware

and than make sure u remove the infections found in malware bytes and superantispyware ....

the deleted option is located in the softwares itself

    and than restart the system

and also after this u get any kind of msg run the ccleaner also

before running these softwares run the msconfig and disable all the start up items and than restart the system and when the system restarts it will give a popup and it will have an option " do not show this msg again " put a chk mark on that

  • Anonymous Nov 04, 2008

thats nice to know that the system is working correctly

but i am more concerned about the superantispyware not being downloaded

are u using a system in office or home ?

Gateway MX6421 does not boot, even when recovery disk is in. In recovery mode, splash sreen opens up, and the timing bar zips across about 3 times then freezes

well this might be the case if the recovery disc is corrupt so if you don't have any important files in the c drive its better to reinstall the OS but before that try the safe mode option while booting the pc.

good luck.

Can't extract files on System Recovery Disc 4 for Compaq Presario model 6350US

At this point, you can try to clean your disk # 4 and see what happen,
or try to make a copy of disk # 4 (if you can copy the disk) and try again.

or

1) Contact your customer support and ask for a new set of disks.(or only # 4)

or

2) Boot your computer with another OS disk (win XP)

or

3) Boot your computer with some utility disk

My recovery CD (gateway 7330gz PC) are no working

I have the same problem with my Gateway 7330gz. My laptop got infected with spywares and it was so annoyed that I have to think about recover the system. So I did it with Gateway Recovery software. I chose the recovery option (press F11 when boot up)from hard drive since my dvd drive was broken. It went well but when it boots up again and Windows XP says detecting and installing the drivers and such, it was frozen haft way through. I turned off power many times to reboot but it kept freezing at that point. I search Internet for help and seen this post. Wonderful! I press F2 to go to BIOS setup screen, use right arrow key to move to Advance menu option. There I use down arrow key to select SpeedStep, hit (-) key to disable it. Then F10 to save and exit, hit enter for OK button. The system boots again but this time it was no longer freezing, the setup process went through ok and continues...I am so happy and type this message so it might help others with the same issue. Thanks

System recovery

It sounds like the boot sector on your main hard drive is corrupted. You should have created an emergency boot disk when you first purchased the computer. Since you don't have the oroginals you should borrow a system CD from a friend and boot up that way and try to a recovery. Selecting F8 during the bootup sequence allows one to start if Safe mode, but I believe (I usually run Linux) you still need the boot sector on the main hard drive to be valid in order for this to work. The F1 gets you to the Bios screen (?) where you can select the boot sequence (hard drive, CD, or floppy first/second/third), among other things. Hopefully someone with more Windows experience than I can assistance better than I can, I just thought I'd throw that out there.
