A black rectangle showing in the middle of the screen this appeared suddenly

this sounds like screen burn with rear projection and plasma when a picture is left sitting still on the screen sometimes it will burn in to the screen rendering it useless i left my ps3 paused on my old tv then when i changed to bbc one it still had a faint call of duty pause screen in the back it can vary from things like that to logos to your black rectangle the only way of repair is by replacing the screen all toghether i would advise you to just take the screen off and start using the tv as a projector if you cant find a screen it is only a bit of ribbed plastic but very hard part to find

Is it safe to play video games on your projection televisions?

Yes,but just don't pause the game's or leave the game without playing for a long time like about 1 to 3 hours.Because DLP tvs and Plasma tvs have higher rate picture screen burn in.The image burn in,the tv picture screen panel are useless, because there no way to get rid of the previous images burn in.

Is it true that plasma screen has an expire date ,in other words if i buy a plasma t.v i certainly have to loose it or replce the screen after it expires

This is not true at all. the only issue with plasmas are that the Y and X buffer boards will ware within a 2 year operational period. the power boards hold up well if the set is placed in a well ventilated area, of course. Also, you will need to refrain from using the plasma unit for a Computer monitor. this will cause a major burn-in affect that will ruin the display.

It really depends on the model you purchase. i would stay clear of any Sony brands and Dell as well.

2 vertical bars on right half-side of screen

you are in luck my friend!  i just performed a fix on a gateway plasma that has LG boards inside.  It is exactly what you are talking about.  Go to the attached link and follow the thread carefully and read it all before starting.  IT WILL WORK!

Check your cables and TV input settings.  Can you get to the on screen menu?  Does anything appear on the screen when the tv is on?

Samsung hdtv HLP5085wx no image. Smelled something burning and sparking, turned off the tv. Tried turning it back on = have sound, NO image!

OMG! Dude, your screen is just plain fried. You don't need a new screen though, You just need a new bulb for it. See, behind the screen is a light bulb (unless your T.V. is plasma screen), sometimes two or three, and that burning smell was the bulb blowing (like when you need to replace a light bulb in a lamp or something). I don't know where you can find a new bulb, but once you replace it everything should be fine.

I'm sorry to be the one with the bad news but the cost of the screen is more than a new TV.
If you want you can call them at Main support number 1-800-243-0000.
Good Luck.

If the screen is broken then yes, it will and can make odd noises. Your cost on replacing a plasma screen will go beyond just purchasing a replacement television.

Black Screen

Ok, this is probably what has happened, you say that you have played games on your tv, well the thing is with HD and Plasma Screen tv's is that when you play Hi-Res games on them the games backdrop will burn itself into the screen, causing the screen to turn dark and not reveal the correct picture it should. People need to learn about this!!!!! Playing games on HD and Plasma tv's will screw up your resolution!!!
