AMC started as a merger between the Nash and Hudson auto companies. In 1970 they purchased Kaiser's Jeep operations. In 1980 the French automaker Renault joined and then bought majority of the company in 1983. In 1987 Renault sold majority shares to Chrysler. Mitsubishi had prior connections with Chrysler (in 1978 Chrysler sold the Mitsubishi Galant as the Dodge Challenger and the Plymouth Sapporo). Up to 1971 they used Borg-Warner transmissions. From 1972-1987 they used Chrysler transmissions. So it is very possible that it has a Mitsubishi system.
