Could be a numerous amount of things. Most common is a blown thermal fuse or high limit safety switch has a open circuit rather than a closed circuit.

How do you get to the belt in order to change it on a Maytag Neptune Dryer (MDE5500)?

There are two clips about one inch in from either side of the lid push them in with a flat tip screw driver and lift the lid.
the there are two screws on the inside of the panel that need to come out then remove the front panel. and you will see the other items that need to be removed to get your belt replaced.

Dryer turns on heats up for a second then turns off

The link below will cover all service procedures for your dryer. Feel free to download and print it.:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/zrlyi1izwly/MDE5500

The procedure below is likely your problem:

It's likely one of the coils is opening a break in the coil as the coil heats up. This coil will shrink when cool and be able to run again. The number for the coil kit, which will replace ALL the coils, for your machine is 12001349.

Replace All coils with Kit Number listed above. Take care not to touch or hit the ignitor or you will be replacing it also. It is VERY brittle.
