Question about KitchenAid KSM150PS Artisan Series Stand Mixer
The mixer attachment head does not rotate when the mixer is turned on yet the motor is running...it seems to have uncoupled from the drive belt or gears?....If I push up on the shaft it will catch and turn about on half rotation and stop...Is this a easy fix for this DIY guy or do I have to bring in for service....Thanks
Be sure the gears mesh fully with your repair. There is a mechanical fuze; a single plastic gear engineered to control damage in event of physical overload from overmixing heavy batter or dough & overheating it causes, use of wrong mix accessory for the batter, slamming into high speed from a stop, mixing real marble into marble cake, etc. These loads can cause bushings in the worm gear assembly to shift so that part of the worm gear runs above the double gear with which it meshes. This mis-mesh match reduces the load the gears can carry so that metal gears break if the mixer becomes heavily loaded again. Locating dowells pretty much assure the gears teeth mesh to proper depth automatically- its the vertical alignment at issue. Special fibre shims, not mere fiber washers, are used to realign; they properly resist deformation and wear.
Also look out for bent or broken dowell pin retatning the large doublegear on the propeller shaft. (the agitator shaft holds the beater, has similar dowell)
Note that the KitchenAid grease is food-grade with no known toxic effects- substitute at your peril.

Hi, The KitchenAid mixers are usually quite easy to work on if you are competent at DIY. It sounds like a gearbox fault. Gearbox parts are easy obtained for most of the models and are easy to repair.
This is a service manual for a lot of the KitchenAid mixers. Might give you an idea on how difficult it is to work on before taking the plunge.
Hope this helps
